Typical RP'ers need not apply. How was travel to "The planet that shall not be named here" accomplished? Was it some sort of mystical teleportation like the Barsoom stories, or, were there physical space craft involved? How did Cabot, and later, Marshall get there? Did the Priest Kings or the Kurii maintain other solar system outposts? that is, fleets of ships, or space stations, etc? For anyone that doesn't know what I'm talking about, this DOES apply to something very popular and pervasive in SL, but I'm trying to avoid the attention of a certain element who are typically unaware of their own origins.

Actual physical space ships.
I'm surprised at that particular question as it pops up immediately in the first book.

Yes, indeed, actual space ships were used, I beleive with advanced cloaking capabilities donated by the Priestkings.

Yeah, that's sort of what I remember, but I thought I might have confused it with other space opera I read at the time. And it was a LONG time ago. Also, I really wasn't a big fan of the series. Not sure I even made it through the first book.
What about the second part of my question? Was there any place in Solar space where a spacecraft from Earth would likely encounter the Priest Kings, or Kurii?
Thing is, I'm doing an orbital plot or trajectory between the two planets on a computer screen as sort of a subtle inside joke, and I'd like to be able to mark some point on it as "PK Ships", or "Kurii here."
Thanks a lot for your answers tho!

Another question
10-21-2008 07:56
OK, I'm really stretching it now.
Is there someone out there who might possibly know enough about orbital mechanics to suggest a possible "slingshot" point around the sun to make it to a planet on the other side?

There was mention of other outposts, but they were not visited in any of the books I read. And there was an indication that they were either abandoned, or otherwise empty of Priest-kings. Well, that was one of the points of having the baby priest-king, the issue of it being created, etc. The dying of the species.
Can't help with slingshot points. heh

if i remember my space knowledges we could see a planet that is behind the sun because the sun's gravitational field will bend the light?

Yeah, I think Isaac once told me in one of his essays that a "far side of the sun" planet was a physical impossibility. Probably contributed to my distaste for the series, back in the day when I insisted it was "SF" and not "Sci Fi."
Thanks again all of you for going along and keeping this thread sane on a flash point topic. And your answers were great.
I'm not so picky about my reading material any more. I should probably buy myself a couple paperbacks and properly aquaint myself again. Tho, you gave me all I really needed to know.

Actually I'm reading "Tribesmen of..." right now. God help me, I don't know why I'm doing it, but I am. I think it's the 10th or 11th book, and as far as I can tell, so far we haven't gone out into space yet to discover if Kurii or Priest-King groups had outposts/other planets. Presumably they do, but as of Tribesmen, I can't tell.
Makes for entertaining lunch-time reading.

Ooh!! That is one of the coolest ones, Oryx! Assassins is super too- but Priest Kings was my fave. Been reading Witness on and off for awhile- not as captivating if you will pardon the pun

edit... and panthers, as well as being 'Amazonian' women, surely exist as animals? Absolutely right: Panther A wild feline of Gor; there are mentions of various varieties and colors in different areas such as the forests of the North (Hunters of Gor) as well as in the jungles of Ushindi. As I ran through the darkness I suddenly saw, before me, some fifty or sixty yards away, four pairs of blazing eyes, a pride of forest panthers. I pretended not to see them and, heart pounding, turned to one side, walking through the trees. At this time, at night, I knew they would be hunting. Our eyes had not met. I had the strange feeling that they had seen me, and knew that I had seen them, as I had seen them, and sensed that they had seen me. But our eyes had not directly met. We had not, so to speak, signaled to one another that we were aware of one another. The forest panther is a proud beast, but, too, he does not care to be distracted in his hunting.... ---Captive of Gor, 8:181

From: Amaranthim Talon There were no cats on Gor unless you count larls... Very close to an earth cat Giani A cat sized panther of the rainforest areas of Schendi. ...In the lower branches of the "ground zone" may be found, also, small animals, such as tarsiers, nocturnal jit monkeys, black squirrels, four-toed leaf urts, jungle varts and the prowling, solitary giani, tiny, cat-sized panthers, not dangerous to man.... ---Explorers of Gor, 32:312

Is there someone out there who might possibly know enough about orbital mechanics to suggest a possible "slingshot" point around the sun to make it to a planet on the other side? Orbital mechanics is my hobby. The point you're looking for is about three quarters of the way up on the left side and about 5 miles out, give or take a ways. You can thank me later by postcard from orGay (See? I put it in pig latin so nobody has to know what we're talking about)
