I was wandering SLEX.. and saw terrain maps for sale, and was wondering how you use them, and if they are only usable for estate land? Or if I made one could I somehow set my mainland parcels to it?

Are you talking about .raw files for terrain editing? If so, then, nope you can't change the mainland terrain texture. Private islands, yes.

Hmmm... this could be two different things. First, what Oryx said: .raw files for loading specific terraforming. (And holy cow, I can't believe how much people are charging for very simple terrains!) Second:The sculpted terrain mapper, which is a gadget that helps you create a sculpted prim modeling the terrain of a particular sim (any sim, including mainland). You then texture it with a map image you provide (like from a snapshot of the SL map window), and yay, you've got a cool 3-D model of your sim.

I think it's the .raws..... the item I saw on SLEX was terrain maps... like the image showed Linden terrain submerged in water, not normal prims, and they weren't terrain shaped.. theyw ere designed to look like things... so I think its the .raws

If I owned a whole sim I would definitely get that. Maybe someday... LOL.

That's a RAW terrain file, which is only useful to private island owners.
The RAW file can be uploaded to change the terrain of the entire sim to match whatever terrain is in the file.
It's not too hard making your own RAW files, there's a free tools out there that can be used.

I hope Ceera will come in and comment on these, as I know she makes terrain map .raw files. From what she's said here on the forums, I believe it's a fairly simple process to do simple designs. For example, this one: Basically draw that design in black and white. Add some gray transitioning if you want gentle slopes rather than vertical dropoffs. So why is this selling for L$15,000? I should note that I would expect complex NATURAL terrains to require genuine work to produce, and those might be worth paying real money for. But many of the terrain maps being sold for 7,000-15,000 look like something I (with approximately zero artistic talent) could make in photoshop in about three minutes. I do see some from other folks for less, so maybe it's just one seller with unrealistic ideas about pricing. On the less expensive side, you can turn your private island into Santa for just L$750! (ETA: LOL, I just saw that my example of a ridiculously simple and overpriced terrain map was the one you were looking at! )

From: Okiphia Rayna thankies ^^ and damn, cant afford my own sim =P WOuld be cool though.. to make the Mona Lisa as a sim It would probably be a fairly easy process to convert a scan of the Mona Lisa into a RAW terrain file... but the quality would be low. It'd be what you would get from a greyscale 256x256 pixel image... rough and grainey. The RAW file is mainly a 2d heightmap with one-meter resolution, if I remember correctly. If you could crop / scale the painting into a 256pixel square, convert it to 256 shades of grey, then you'd have most of the work done on your terrain. -Atashi p.s. although it would be fairly easy to make the file, the results might not look that great...
