I'm an artist, a sculptor. Some of my works are appealing to the visual senses, a few are conceptual. One of them, The Price of Oil (part of the Political is Personal installation covered in http://slartmagazine.com/political-personal.htm) is such a piece. It is not for sale. To get it, you must die. Leave SL, be gone, forever. I'll give it to your designated heirs. Well, I have a "buyer" for it. So now the question is. How does one die in SL. The interested party has no idea how to do this. Neither do I? How can we make it so this avatar is gone and gone for good, never to come back again? Thank you Wake

Hi Wake, I've read the article and was very intrigued. I'll stop by the exhibition next time I'm in world. As far as "dying", I think the account must be cancelled from the control panel here on the website. The type of account (Free or Premier) will dictate how long the account stays active before disappearing. For free accounts I think it's the next day, and for premier I think it's related to your next billing date. Once the account has gone, it will also disappear in world.. you won't be able to find them in search for instance (although I think they can stop you finindg them in search anyway). Even then I think you can still reinstate your account for $9.95 within something like 6 months. So as you can see, it'll take a while for "death" to be confirmed.. unless you want to build the idea of possible resurrection into your piece. Also you may want to deal with the idea of reincarnation.. in that the "heir" may in fact be the same RL person using an alt. Would you treat this as if the RL individual was the reincarnated soul? It's a complicated business this living and dying malarky..

Now, this is one of the more weird things I've heard of in sl. Hey, but to each his own.

If you want to be sure, dust off and nuke it from orbit ... no, wait ...
1 - Owner goes into account and clears any payment info. Start the process to change the credit card but don't enter any new information. 2 - create a hotmal/gmail/whatever account. Change the SL account to use this new emali. 3 - Owner gives you the password. 4 - Using your ISP, create an email acount with some gibberish name. 5 - Go into the dead man's SL account and change the email to the new address. 6 - Set the password to some random string of letters and numbers. BEFORE YOU LEAVE THE WEB PAGE, do the next step. 7 - On SL account, cancel the account. 8 - On your ISP, delete the gibberish email account.
That should be as a dead and unrecoverable as you can get it without direct access to the data files on the server.

From: Yosef Okelly ...3 - Owner gives you the password... So the only way to die in SL is assisted suicide? That's illegal most places, and against the TOS too.

Hey Yosef, that just might work!
I can't see involving a Linden in this, too weird to get it done.
I'll see if the person is up to it.
Thanks all!

You probably have enough ideas, Wake, but when an earlier avatar of mine committed sluicide, I made it a performance piece (purely for my own amusement) well before logging out for the last time. First, my avatar was returned to its default state, made bald and stripped naked. Then, absolutely everything that could be deleted from my inventory was trashed. Finally, I used Edit Appearance to completely distort the body until it bore no resemblance whatsoever to the avatar that had walked and talked in SL. Thus, my avatar 'died' symbolically, so that my final memory was of a creature destroyed. A public performance piece prior to Yosef's suggestion might be rather fitting, I think
