I just read the blog entry, and I'm confused.

I'm not sure what regions they are talking about. It sounds like brand-new areas. I thought this was supposed to be to beautify existing mainland?

This sounds like a way to devalue existing mainland?

I mean, where are these places? And twice the prims?

Maybe someone can explain this to me.

coco

P.S. I'm asking here in order not to sound like an idiot on the blog.

It appears that they are giving some residents what they want, in the form of new planned and zoned mainland regions, with parcels that can't be subdivided under 1024 (eliminating adfarms).

Of course, what's implied here is that the existing mainland can pretty much go to hell. Oh wait, some of it is already there.

Edit: Here's the URL for the map of the new mainland: http://wiki.secondlife.com/w/images/8/8a/Bay_City_Map_1.jpg

It's going to be placed near the existing Linden city sims.

Message to every existing mainland owner: We made a dent in the ad farm blight, see ya, we're going to go play with our shiny new sim project idea now.

Not sure if this new shift in priorities will devalue existing mainland, but it certainly won't ADD any value.

/me blinks.

Not exactly what I expected but still look forward to seeing it. Hopefully this is just one project and they're also going to be looking at existing mainland, too.

Mainland's a pretty big place. Unless they're planning on adding 10x (50x?) what they're talking about in the blog, mainland prices won't notice.

And twice the prims?

All sims (exect void ones) are 65,536m2 and can have up to 15,000 prims put down on them. Normally, the number of prims you can have on a given chunk of land is 15000 / 65536 * m2 (15000 / 65536 * 512 = 117).

Estate managers can tweak this formula, giving land owners more (or less) prims to play with. Since the sim is the still same size 65k m2 and can still only hold 15k prims, they also have to reserve parts of the sim to have fewer prims. This is why Blue says that the 'Gov will retain about 1/2 the land on these sims - those areas will be open green spaces without prims (or with very few of them).

I'm confused. Is the new land estate land or mainland? what's the tier structure? Am I missing that info because I'm tired or is it not available yet?

Double prim mainland isn't COMPLETELY new...
02-22-2008 22:10
Way back in the early days of Second Life, LL created a couple of urban-themed sims with double-prim land: I think that Grignano and Sistiana are two of them. Like the private estates with double-prim land, a lot of the sim is left empty. So there is precedent.

You didn't make your 5000 posts by sundown!

They didn't say anything about whether it would have a different tier structure. All of mainland is currently one big ginormous estate owned by LL - I guess they'll be forming a new Linden-owned estate for this project, and do their controls that way.

That was the caffeine talking. I will revise my tag.

Thank you. Now that the caffeine has left my system, I could not make it through the whole blog entry.

Actually, you didn't say which day's sundown, so technically you still have time.

I went back to the original blog announcement because I was trying to figure out why they're working on the bright and shiny first instead of fixing the existing stuff, and discovered that many of us got our hopes up too soon - they were planning to do this new city thing first all along:
From: Linden Blog entry from Feb. 8
What will we work on? Good question; basically, we will consider anything and everything that we feel will make the mainland more attractive, fun, engaging and interesting for new or existing residents. Initially, we’re looking at extending the city area which is very popular, so that will involve some new built up areas to the west of Barcola (joined via bridges to preserve existing water views). We’ll also be looking at new park areas, Linden folly builds, beautifying existing Linden land, better gathering places and seeding new mainland with themed builds. Some of the content may find its way into the Library in your inventories.

In addition, there will be other work ongoing as part of this program that will include repairing terrain, and yes - finally completing the missing coastline on the southern continent.

So we wait. And wait. Well, I think I'll go get a good night's sleep instead of waiting for this to play out.

The math of it all doesn't sit right with me...
Infrastructure on ~56% of region.
~44% residential parcels with 2x prim allotment.
Regular tier rate on 44% of the region wont cover its operating costs + profit.
wtf...
Much higher tier rates for these regions? or a little higher for everyone to make up the difference?

So one night's sleep's worth of waiting, eh? Yeah, I'm sure they'll start working on fixing the existing mainland sometime tomorrow...

Existing tier will remain the same and the tier for these sims will be higher. Unless they want to crash the mainland land market.

Maybe now we can get completely separate search windows for estates, these new sims and existing mainland?

That is a lovely picture. I shall go there now.

Actually I'm hoping after a good night's sleep I'll forget all about wanting something done with the existing mainland. Maybe it's not realistic, but I have to have a little hope or I'll roll over and die. Playing dead is cool - being dead, not so much.

Peeing on ad farms helps though. Keep fighting the good fight.

As each sim/island has only 15000 prims ...its really the prims that are being sold and not the sq mt so much. So if LL double prims...ie 2.0 prim bonus it means 1/2 the land will have all the prims and the other 1/2 will be empty of prims (thats a simplistic explanation).
All they will do is charge double for the rentable 'primmed' land.

If you need to see it in action I have 2 sims that are double primmed you can tp to them from my profile....it means nice 'sharable' public areas and good spaces between plots plus plenty of prims to fill your house/garden with things.

Jeesh, you guys will complain about anything. Personally I'm very excited about this move and think it's very positive. We don't know all the details yet but then who cares? A couple of new sims attached to the mainland filled with expertly crafted builds on a single theme, it's going to look freaking awesome.

Also, half a dozen sims, even if they're gold plated and filled with ponies, is not going to make a jot of difference to the mainland market.

So they are creating zoned mainland. You know LL doesn't have the manpower to police this stuff, so we should expect the number of new cities to be very limited.

I'm sorry, I just got a huge "meh" out of this. I was expecting the existing mainland to get spruced up.

You sure? I heard some Goreans will pay any amount to get with a pony...

I'm excited about seeing the new sims but they don't really do much for the +90k people who are already premium. Like you say, a dozen sims is nothing vs the size of the grid.

Well it is nice to see the Lindens take steps to diminish the free-for-all Wild West nonsense that makes up the mainland. Common sense is to put systems in place to help stop alot of the grumbling and negative publicity. And will also cut the Abuse Report staffing issues in half.

Let's hope this experiement is conducted successfully and then spreads like wildfire across the grid.
