I got my new computer about 3 months ago but since then replaced the video card for a better one, ok so I was looking on the drivers page at my video card and then ran a dixdag to see the date on my drivers and from what that says and the website my video card is 2 months into being updated so should I uninstall old drivers and install new drivers off the website or have people had problems running SL after such an update?

When you install a new video card, you need to wipe the old drivers completely, and it's usually a good idea to use a program like drivercleaner to make sure you get everything. Those little buggers tend to hang around otherwise. Also, the drivers on the cd that came with your card may be out of date by the time you buy the card, so I would suggest going through the manufacturer's website and pulling the new ones from there. nVidia and ATi both give pretty easy access to the drivers you need.

If you're having problems now, go ahead and wipe and reinstall. It can take a little time, but it's pretty easy.

are you experiencing problems?

often the "if it isnt broken, dont fix it" theory is a good one...though drivers are usually benign..

also it is good to know what card? where are the drivers coming from you are considering..

if it is an nvidia based card, i always use the drivers from nvidia... ati has reference drivers for their cards as well i tend to use drivers until they wont run something, then update, but thats just caution from the years i spent doing support...:) i knew a lot of co-workers who we're "update device driver wizards" :P and never looked for other causes of issues...

bottom line if it works for everything you use it for, i wouldnt worry about it...newer drivers can make some difference with things...but not a huge amount unless they are written for a particular purpose...currently, Vista compatiblity with apps comes to mind. :)

Thanks and it is Nvidia 8600 GT and I have not had any problems so far but it seemed to be the thing to do is keep the drivers updated so that is why I asked and I downloaded the correct one to my desktop until I decided wheather or not I need to update yet. I got the update from here http://www.nvidia.com/content/drivers/drivers.asp

I am also running windows XP Pro and have no intentions on going to vista until they work out all the bugs it has right now.

i too run XP Pro... vista is down the road...

Nvidia makes very good cards and the driver packages are very nice...

and with XP you can rollback the driver in the device manager if the new one creates any issues, may as well give it a go if you already have it

...another good idea is do a run and go to "dxdiag -ghost" ...it should have a more help tab or somesuch which will show if the old cards drivers are still mucking about. been 4 years since i did it for a living, but i think thats what the tab is called.

What bugs? once I got the current drivers, Vista runs great for me, installed it on all my machines in march.
I'll never go back to XP..
