I'm obviously a 'newbie'. Can anyone tell me if there's something wrong with my system? When I try to edit appearance everything continues to change randomly. I can't tell what I'm selecting. Even body shape keeps shifting if I select the 'body' button... Am I missing something?
TIA

What are your system specifications? Does your CPU, Memory, and most importantly your video card meet or exceed the minimum required stats to run SL? Knowing nothing at all about your hardware and Operating System, no one can aid you. But my guess is that it's related to limits of your hardware or drivers that are out of date. Could also be preference settings that just won't run on your hardware.

Thanks for the quick reply! My system is XP SP2, Pent.4 2.2 GHtz, 512 MB Ram with an Extreme 3D Graphics chip set (30GB Ultra ATA100). I've tried to find a comparison to the nVidia but haven't so far. Is the Graphics the problem?
TIA

If it's Intel's Extreme 3-D graphics built into the computer mainboard, you have a problem there Houston. ;> LL says they do not support Intel Graphics archetecture of any kind. SL bombed on a Dell Optiplex Workstation I had here on my workbench, utilizing Intel based graphics array. Swapping in any flavor of PCI-X ATI Radeon 1X00 or nVidia 7x00 series card immediately granted me stability and playability. (Upwards of 30 FPS on either card in a pretty heavily populated sim in a club) All of that stuff jumping around as you describe may be rendering latency as yor CPU struggles to generate the video. Intel embedded graphics solutions do not offer much help by way of OpenGL rendering at all. In fact, mine was a slide-show on a 3 Ghz Hyperthreaded P-4 using Intel Graphics. Time to trade-up or purchase a card dear. :>

Intel's "Extreme" Graphics is generally regarded as completely inadequate for SL. If I remember rightly it's not on the SL "supported" list, because it's abysmally slow and cruddy.

I agree with the previous 2 posters. Intel video cards are not supported. You likely will not get usable access with any Intel built-in video card. Buy an nVidia or ATI card, and you should be fine. Look at the various cards that LL lists on the system requirements page. You can probably pick one up for $100 USD or so that will work fine.

While you are at it, serioisly consider another 512 MB of RAM, as that extra memory will greatly improve performance. The rest of your system is fine for SL.

Thanks All! I'll get an ATI or nVidia card. I have a Dell Dimension 2350 so it doesn't have an AGP port. I'm looking at the Geforce FX5200 for PCI slot...
Will also add some memory.
Thanks again for the help.

Just to confirm that answer: I saw this kind of behavior on a friend's laptop, and she had an Intel video card if I remember right. Textures on portions of her avatar would change very rapidly.

Two upgrades in as many weeks!!

Upping my Radeon 7500 to 9550 made the actual picture quality hugely improved.
Doubling RAM to 1Gb has made it fairly fly! Loading is so much faster - now I know I'm only waiting for LL servers! Nice one Ceera!
