I've tried a couple of brands of beards and I look like a witness protection program reject. Terribly phony looking. Anyone know/like a great beard maker in SL?

I suspect you'd need a skin layer to match the beard to make it work.

On the other hand, if you think beards look weird on humans... yes, I've seen anthro animal avatars with beards over their fur.

Try the 2nd floor of "Discord De" @ Synchronicity sim.

They have braids and corn rows type of hair but on the 2nd floor i saw some facial hair for men and it looked decent.

I wans't thrilled with the ones at Allie & Ali (?), or that Pirate whatever place in Calleta. I think the ones at Discord are probably your best bet.

Under any circumstances they'll take a bit of tweaking because facial shapes vary so much.

Try the shops in Caledon, I seem to remember they had some. I think there is even a free one on the little freebie carts.

A lot depends on what kind of beard you want.
For instance, long, medium or short.

I knew from day 1 in SL that my main AV would have
a long beard (since I've grown them in rl), but I couldn't
find anything except a pirate beard (almost 3 years ago).

So I set off and made my own out of flexi-prims. Depending
on the lighting, it looks ok to me.

Long beards, frankly, aren't in great demand.

There are some entries here:

Thanks all!

I keep running into the same two makers of beards, and they're not floating my boat, although they put a lot of effort into them. I'll snoop around Caledon today.

I'm looking for a close-cropped, neat beard. I used to be able to just do it through my appearance sliders, but my new skin won't let it show through, if that makes any sense.

It's nothing to do with it being modify or not... when you buy a skin what you get is usually a whole body tattoo with the skin texture on it, the Linden skin layer is completely covered. The result is that nothing you do with the skin sliders will ever be seen.

Oh, okay.

I just remember that I could add makeup on some skins but not on others. I have no idea about beards - I will take your word for it.

Unless you keep your skin client side in the character folder. ;)

Interesting, I suppose you can add makeup if the tattoo layer is alpha or has holes in it.

Check out the Skyshop. My male alt has a nice, long beard from there, but I believe they also had a short one. It actually does look like hair, though. The Skyshop has nice stuff, they've been around a long time, and yet I hardly ever see them mentioned in hair thread. Go check them out.

A long, long time ago Bewitched had some, but I haven't been in their men's section in forever and I'm not sure how realistic they were.

My partner's beard is from Calico (I don't know if that's the same or different from Calico Ingmann Creations, and it's been years.) If he'd ever log in, I could inspect it and get the maker's name...
