The question of "What is a low priced portable computer that will run SL well?" seems to come up fairly often. The answers generally include comments about making sure that it comes with a discrete video card.

I see that Dell has a 200 dollar off deal on a "Studio 15" that comes with a 256Mb ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3450, for a price of 649 dollars.

Just though I'd pass that on in case that might be a good buy.

Um, I fried mine using SL in just a couple of months. It's just too much of a strain on the graphics card.

I have a Dell Studio 15. It runs SL great. MUCH better than my desktop ever could.

How many frames per second do you get in a typical sim, and with what graphics settings?

Was it the same model?

The common advice is to use a cooler if using portables for intense 3D graphics applications.

Did you get a different model after that one fried that has survived the strain of SL?

I don't have a laptop, I just came across an ad that sounded promising.

A cooler won't do much good if you want to go to a coffee shop and SL, hmm?

If I had a laptop for SLing I suppose I'd do my SLing at home using a cooler and just do nice safe surfing when out and about.

People ask about cheap portables that can do SL pretty often, often mentioning that the model they are thinking of has integrated Intel graphics.

I'm pretty sure Amaranthim has experience with laptop cooling.

Pep (I don't think it was that positive though! :( )

I run SL on a Dell laptop, model Inspiron 1501.

It has ATI Radeon Xpress1150 video, I only had to update the drivers on day 1. It runs SL acceptably. FPS rates are usually are seldom below 8 and often around 16 on my SATELLITE DISH ISP (which supposedly isn't capable of handling SL). I realize that would not be acceptable performance to many of you - but I HAVE seen worse. With Satellite being my only broadband option AND considering the purchase price of the computer, I am decidedly agreeable to this user experience.

I run SL on this machine daily, usually for several hours, although I do always use a USB-powered fan cooling pad.

It has served me flawlessly since January of 2008, when I paid $499 for it at Wal-Mart.

...cheap enough IMO.

Good Lord...All I know is that I have a Dell Studio 15 and that it runs SL great...beyond that, I am lucky I can figure out how to turn it on and plug in the power cord. I am totally computer illiterate when it comes to hardware or frame rates. I have children and an ex husband to figure out all that stuff.
