If you do, how well does it run?
We are currently looking for a new internet provider as our current cable company is starting to charge us rediculous prices, and it seems only other route to go is DSL, just wondering how SL runs on DSL for others.
Thanks very much in advance
Nissa

I'm on DSL through AT&T and it runs fine for me. Use to do high-speed and switched to this about 5 months ago with no complaints

Yes. I forget what my UL/DL speeds are but I've had no problem in 5 years. I carry the laptop downstairs and connect to the 802.11n wireless router as well and have very few problems that way either.

All DSL lines are not created equal - a lot goes into making a 'good' one. Stuff like how far away you are from the phone company and how good the wiring is things like that.
Aside from 'does this ISP suck?' you really can't know anything about how good it will be unless you ask somebody in your neighborhood.

We have (I asked the Geek) a 3 megabyte DSL connection, and it works famously. We'll be getting FIOS soon, though, and the Geek can hardly wait. That's supposed to be some sort of superextraspecialfast connection.

Yes, no problem on a 1024/256 DSL connection in Central Europe. Texture loading is sometimes slow and FPS suck, but that's more due to my PC than being caused by the wire.

When I first ordered DSL the company said we had DSL service but forgot to mention that I was too far from the switching station for any signal that was much better than dial-up. After continual service calls over six months, one of their independent service techs finally admitted that the signal in the neighborhood sucked. Cable was installed shortly thereafter.

i used to hate DSL when i didn't know what it was ..because i had cable at the time.. once i got my DSL i learned very quickly it is a more consistent connection and not user based.. Cable ping depends on how many people are using it in your area and DSL is based on where you are in the line and how close or far you are from the link up.. i think i had 4mb inconsistent per second with cable back then and went right into 9mb per second all day long.. DSL for the win.. the only thing that slows my sl down is my on board video..bleh i hate on board video.

Absolutely correct, Ceka, that cable based connection depends on usage, and the cable company forgot to mention that fact as well. For some of us living in back waters, connection options are limited.

I use verizon DSL and SL voice really messes up with it. Waiting for the optimized services to become available (fiber optic they call it?) That may help.

thanks all. We found out via the Dish company for the TV that yes, cable may have more mpbs (sp?) but its shared and we have a lot of cable customers in the area we are which is quite rural, not a big city and DSL will not be shared. The only option we have is to go DSL, it's either that or lose internet and tv completely, and what the cable company is now charging us is rediculous. Who knows after we tell them this time we are leaving them they may offer us a better deal, if not, I may be a little slower on SL, OR faster Thanks everyone for the comments and advice, really appreciate it Nissa

While it may not be as 'fast' as cable, I have never had any major hitches with my DSL internet and SL. Of course being where I use a shared connection (household with multiple cpus) I get maybe a hardly noticeable slowdown, but only if everyone in the house is either surfing or downloading at the same time.

Mine works fine, but it can lag a bit in areas with a lot of avatars or textures. The problem I have with DSL is that I only get 10GB per month and my overage charges are very high if I run over. Make sure you know what your usage limits are and what to avoid to not go over your limit.
I have to watch out for sites like Youtube and keep my graphics on SL turned low or my usage goes up fast.

No issues whatsoever with AT&T ADSL here. And, I agree... Cable companies suck dead rhinoceri through soda straws!

Though this is not the place to do it, knowing where people are from would be helpful in the decision making process for choosing a service provider. From the Great Wasteland of Colorado: Aurora

I got the fastest DSL I could from AT&T (I forget what the speed was, sorry). I've never had cable to compare, but I routinely waltz about with a 256 draw without trouble or rezzing issues.

Just wanted to settle one thing that people always get wrong. DSL bandwidth is still shared at the DSLAM trunk, and both DSL and cable bandwidth is shared at the ISP gateway.
The only real difference between DSL and cable with regards to oversubscription is where it occurs- downsream of the node as with cable, or upstream of the node with DSL.
That is the facts folks, sorry. Even FiOS is shared to a certain extent but the bandwidth available in fiber is far greater than can be oversold in any one error to be considered over saturation.

I was wondering, and it might be helpful to the OP when switching over from cable to DSL, what should the bandwidth be set at in our "preferences"?

From: TundraFire Nightfire I was wondering, and it might be helpful to the OP when switching over from cable to DSL, what should the bandwidth be set at in our "preferences"? I have mine maxed out. Not a problem with my 6Mbps connection. A good rule of thumb may be to set it to no more than half your total allocated bandwidth, to account for any network overhead, latency, and other periodic slowdowns your network may encounter.
