rez the box on the ground
right click and choose open
then click the "copy to inventory" button

that will put the item(s) in your inventory in a folder named whatever the object was named.

Also, you need to be in a parcel that allows object entry. Look up at the top of your screen; if you see a little box with a red circle slash through it, you can't put anything on the ground. Try going to your home, or to a sandbox to "rez" stuff. And be sure to either delete the box or take it back into your inventory. ;)

Welcome to the forums and to SL, Sammantha! Woot!

Another way to tell if you can open a box wherever you are: look at the bottom of your screen and be sure the "Build" button is not grayed out. If the button is blue, you can rez a box (or anything) on the ground.

Most Freebie boxes have "landmarks" and "notecards" in them that may automatically open when you copy stuff to inventory, and show up on your screen. For the landmarks, just click the little x on the top - it will stay in your inventory in the folder you just created. For the notecards, you get a choice whether to "discard" or "keep".

If you discard or delete something, it ends up in your "Trash" folder. You can retrieve them until such time as you "Empty Trash".

OH and one more thing: to wear your new hair, just find it in inventory, right-click, and choose "wear". You can do that with an entire folder, if it contains an outfit (choose "add to outfit";).

Just be aware though, that prim hair shows as a box in your inventory anyway. You just right click on it and choose wear.
The best way to tell if it is a box of hair or just the hair itself is to rez it anyway. If it shows as the hair rezzed on the ground, right click and choose take, to take it into your inventory then wear it.

One more thing, (took me a while to figure this one out), if once you wear the hair you notice that you seem to have a bald spot, or that it just looks 'weird', you need to adjust it in 'edit'.
ie, dbl click the item in question (you'll see that it kinda glows), then, SLOWLY - ever so lightly- use the arrows to scootch it left/right or up/down, etc. :)
If you need more info on this, just ask...

Oh, and nearly all hairs are copyable, so if you're afraid to make a mistake while you're editing it, you can right click on the hair in your inventory before you wear it, choose copy, then paste it into the same folder. Rename the original hair something a little different so you can remember between the two.

Hi, Sam Welcome to the Forums and SL. If you want to open the box, you can click on it and drag it to the ground (this is called "rezzing";) and the box will appear on the ground. Right click on it, and a pie menu will come up. Click on Open, and another box will come up that shows you the contents of the box you're trying to open. You will then have 2 options shown...either "copy to inventory" or "copy and wear" (I think). Click on "copy to inventory" and the items that are in the box will be transferred to a folder in your inventory, with the same name as the box. In the case of copiable items, they will copy to you inventory AND remain in the box. You can then either right click on the box for the pie menu again and choose "take" (which will take the box back into your inventory, back to wherever it was when you took it out), or you can click on "more" and then "delete" and POOF the box is gone. Into your trash folder, which you can then right click and choose empty trash. But like the others said, make sure you're in a place where you can build, or it won't let you "rez" the box onto the ground. If build is enabled where you're at, you can also click on the box in inventory, click on "wear" and, when it appears on you, right clik on it, then "detach" and follow the same instructions for opening it. Good luck!
Edit: I said you can right click on the box in your inventory and click on wear, then when it appears on yourself, click "detach". I'm sorry, that was incorrect. You should actually right click on the box you're "wearing" and then on "drop". That drops the box to the ground, the same as if you had just rezzed it out of your inventory.

It might be worth mentioning that if you right-click on a folder in your inventory that contains just a shirt and choose "add to outfit" the shirt in the folder will replace the shirt you are wearing.
If you right click on a folder in your inventory that contains just a shirt and choose "replace outfit" you will find yourself standing there in nothing but that shirt.
"Replace outfit" is good though for folders that contain whole outfits.
