I am trying to assist a newbie friend who is having trouble seeing things properly. For instance, in his view, I have no head!?

I've tried about all I know without success. His machine is a 2.0 GHz PC running XP with Service Pack 2, and with 512 Megs of RAM.

[10:10] Pete Applemoor: Graphics Card Vendor: NVIDIA Corporation Graphics Card: GeForce2 MX/AGP/SSE2

He is working with a virgin install of the current client.

I am posting on his behalf to speed-up the replies. Here is our chat exchange (used with permission):

================================
[9:53] You: Pete, please describe again what you're seeing and I will ask in the forums for you.
[9:53] Pete Applemoor: no ground, or buildings, i do see your upper body with no head when i'm close, i can see a couple signs
[9:53] Pete Applemoor: everything just floating above water
[9:54] You: k
[9:55] Pete Applemoor: my hair and eyes are missing
[9:56] Pete Applemoor: in appearance editing
================================

If anyone has ideas, they'd be much appreciated. TIA

make sure your friend has the latest drivers (very important) also would help knowing what video card your friend has Help> About Second Life> Graphics Card.

would also help knowing what kind of connection and if using a router

TY Toy. I edited original post to include the Graphics card, which is an NVIDIA Corporation Graphics Card: GeForce2 MX/AGP/SSE2.

He is using DSL, direct connect (no router).

I will add that he has flushed his cache, and relogged without change.

And thanks for the "current driver" reminder.

Hmmm in view of the low memory your friend has (512MB really marginal for SL, wish they would update the System Requirements page), perhaps this is just a very very slow rez? If he sets his draw distance to the shortest (64) in Preferences/Graphics tab, does this still happen?

Amras, are you a furry, or non-human avatar?

I ask, because of Pete not seeing yoru head is the wierd part. Prims I can see, but no avatar mesh? I've never seen that. Ruthed, yes. Missing Image, yes. Greyed out, yes. Not just missing 0.o

Aside from Draw Distance, as mentioned above, go through all Prefernce tabs. Specifically the Object Detail slider.

Dude, you are a true and good friend, and I love you like the brother that my mom claims she never had, but you are in fact acting like a flaming douche on white toast with a side order of dickknob salsa..maybe you should reconsider this course of action and we go find something else to do.

No, Jessy. I'm a human avatar & my head is probably somewhere in my crotch where my hair and shoes used to end up! lol!

Agree. I have never seen that either which was one reason I brought this to the forum.

Agreed it is on the low side.

Nah. We have been on and conversing more than an hour with no change.

Yes.

But TY for your good willingness to help, Nika. :)
