Well, interesting. A few things can be gleaned from the website:

-- Their blogs started last October.
-- Their corporate address is in Belgium ("Virtual Development", VIRD), but the .sl domain is Slovenia
-- It is difficult to figure out their differentiation from SL -- they DO stress their inworld economy, seem to think that they will be evolving it to be something unique. Dunno.

Doesn't seem to have a lot of momentum as yet - they are almost invisible on the web, and the sections of their website that deal with their company are stubs.

Edit: Didn't try the world out. Call me paranoid, but I'm not letting some invisible Belgian/Slovenia company with an obviously fuzzy concept of intellectual property stream bits to my machine.

The website for the functioning Chinese OpenSim world that I visited called DreamWorld is at http://www.3ddw.com/home/index.php . This in not the one with .sl at the end.

Here's a a link to a few pictures from there: http://s198.photobucket.com/albums/aa245/SuezanneC-Baskerville/Dreamworld/.

Here's one picture.

If I'm not wrong, Dreamworld is owned by Count Burks. An SL land baron who own Dreamworld Estated.

I think he must have pissed off with Linden Lab's land price changes since 2008 that affect his land business and decided to start his own virtual world.

Well, he did the right thing. With your investment in LL's hand, nothing is secure. You might come crashing down when LL flip a switch in their policy.

It doesn't seem to work, and is carbon copy, even down to the login screen. I don't see it as "the right thing." It's pretty blatantly using just about every aspect of Linden Labs, down to the fonts, colors, login screen, etc. Only nothing works, it's like the worst day imaginable in SL LOL. Teleports, inventory, search etc just doesn't work. I logged in to see it, and was the only person in-world. The "right thing" would be making something unique. LL didn't invent virtual worlds or the internet but did something unique. I am scornful of copycats :D

Yeah, I don't click on links from people I don't know, usually. It can be either spyware or spam. If they wanna plug or share something they can answer a question, is my pov.

Um, its using the same client, why would you expect it to use a different login screen? That's like complaining that two different websites still have the same browser buttons and things around them. :)

Based on the avatar images on their website, it's unlikely they're going to be relegating adult content to their equivalent of Zindra. :D

Look what just became visible to you. As for the bit streaming part you should be fine, you have my personal guarantee I won't hack your intellectual property rights and bits.

Count Burks is very busy, taking care of residents, working on the expansion of the Metaverse, looking for a billionaire to fund me.

This doesn't seem the place to hold question hour about Dreamworld outside of Second Life but since you are so concerned about your intellectual bits and foreign offshore companies from Slovenia or even worse Sierra Leone you shouldn't.

Didn't intend for any bad press to come about was just wondering if anyone had seen it. I logged onto it last night. It's not very easy to use controls are off. I just wanted to know had anyone tried it yet and seen the references to SL. thanks for responding everyone.

It wasn't the fact of it being Slovenia, but the anonymity of Dreamworld's makers that was worrying. And, the fact of the address of the company being in Belgium, yet the hosting being in Slovenia (or Sierra Leone, I guess), was also similar to various scam corporations. Particularly when that one address is the only information offered about the makers.

Over time, I'm sure the Count will build up his offering so that, for example, it points to a company's website (I couldn't find a website for "Virtual Development";) with the names of real people on it. As I encountered it yesterday, there was no way to figure out who was behind the product. Google (the U.S. version at least) gave only one hit for the Count's "Dreamworld" in the first few pages, among many hits for various other products or projects named the same thing.

I'm willing to browse a website from anywhere, because normal browser/firewall security is in place during that. Again, I may be paranoid, but I don't download a calculator from Download.com until its maker is willing to let me see who they are. And, at least in most home networks, streaming media is not checked for anything.

The top level domain ".sl" doesn't tell you anything about where the host is. A lot of countries sell their domains to anyone, it's a little extra income for a small country with a cool two letter abbreviation like "tv".

Edit: Damn, the ferret beat me to it!

But, some examples:

www.last.fm (TLD belongs to the Federated States of Micronesia)
tr.im (TLD belongs to the Isle of Man)
www.anawfullotoftelevisionstations.tv (TLD belongs to Tuvalu)

Although these TLDs are technically assigned to specific countries, many have recognized their worth as "vanity" TLDs.

Obviously, there are still many technical problem to solve. This is common to any virtual world that use SL reverse engineered technology.

Legend City has the same problem when they started. Now their world is much better. More smooth than OSgrid

Is Dream World not just a grid based on Open Sim, like Open Life is, then?
