Hi everyone Me again - sorry. I have edited my preferences so that Local and IM chat isn't saved anymore. however, is there a way on SL that when I chat to a friend, the older chat (from before I changed preferences) can be removed? Thanks again, Caitlin

the Chat and IM files are saved on your hard drive. If you look in your preferences window it will show you where they are saved. Try deleting them or moving them to a new location on your hard drive, that will probably remove them.
If that doesn't work, just send several new lines of IM or chat with only a "." on each line. The viewer saves only a few lines of text, that should get rid of it.

Look in Edit/Preferences/Communication to find the path to your chatlog directory. Probably something like C:\Program Files\Secondlife\chatlog.
In My Computer, navigate to that folder and delete its contents.
NOTE: I don't recommend this. I log all chat and IMs...you never know when you are going to have to dig up an obscure remark someone made to you six months back. I also log time and datestamps, to make finding that remark easier.
IMs are saved in .txt files, one per person that you IM with. Local chat is saved in a monster file called chat.txt.
I find that it's a good idea to edit this file periodically. I cut off the oldest parts and save them as separate archived .txt files, only keeping the last 3 months in the chat.txt file. It simply gets too big for Wordpad to handle, otherwise.
