Hi all, I as a habit when bored I will start building with a standard set up of linking two prims 5 m's apart. Today when trying to link two prims 5 meters apart I get the popup -unable to link pieces too far apart. Now I have been doing this for well close to 3 years lol and though at times there has been some linking issues (not many) I am really concerned cause when I cant build its like taking an appendage away rofl. Anyone else experiencing this issue?

Sorry I don't have an answer for you, just another question. You say your standard setup is two link 2 prims 5m apart. I'm just curious but what is the benefit in doing that?

Small prims have a shorter linking distance. Was that a factor?

for Tex I have a certain building technique that I use for certain structures, its the same beginning steps which also answers the other question since both prims start at the default sizes (SAME AS i HAVE BEEN USING FOR 3 YEARS) it would seem to indicate that somehow the linking distance as been altered. I can decrease the distance AND THEN once linked , by editing linked pieces then trying to separate to 5 m's the piece jumps back once released to its prior position. Since our standard size expanded is 10x10x10 linking to 5m's is very important so hense the reason for my concern.

kk for 10x10 xwhatever still links as it should. The .5 X.5 X.5 default shapes wont link above a 4.5m distance. This is the same size and distance (the .5's at a distance of 5m's)I have regularly started with for a long time ) I have literally started half a dozen of these each day for the last few months lol), and hope its corrected back soon lol my technique will no longer work till it does (well kk,, maybe I can jump through a few more hoops to acomplish the set up but grrr what a pain .

It actually improved the algorithm to make linking more inclusive. However, some edge cases like, linking two small prims a far distance apart are now slightly more restrictive. Make the prims bigger, or add in a 3rd prim. If you want the nuts and bolts of the new algorithm, look here: http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Linkability_Rules

The statement is state inducing for me lol. At least I know that it would appear to be a permanent change though unwelcomed from me at this point maybe I will like it better if I see how or what it helps till then thanks again

I still don't understand the importance of linking two prims 5 m apart. Why do you do that to start building? Is this some clever method nobody told me about?

It could just've been that your connection was not quite right, so the changes you made were not received by SL. Stormy internet weather, or perhaps the tubes were blocked. Is it ok now? If it isn't are you having packetloss?

But there are also things that used to link, which now won't. So i guess maybe it was a wash. But It may have skewed things in the direction LL wanted (less bad griefy links, more good useful links)

Pushing this thread up as I seem to have the same problem.. I was working on a skybox, and when trying to link all parts i'm told some parts are too far away. I tried moving it closer, linking, then moving apart, but it jumps right back.. Not having built much before, just getting the parts properly aligned was a major pain for me, and if I can't link it.. It will be a recipe for disaster.. The build is rectangular and 40 m long. Anyone know a way to fix it? Or should I just pack up my prims right away..

While the rules are different, you cannot link anything with a center to center distance of greater than 30 meters.. It actually falls a bit short of that normally. For larger builds I just link things in sections and then use Builders Buddy to rez them in position later.. (Builders Buddy is an open source tool, just do a search of the forums for the scripts, or IM me later on tonight (5pm SL) and I will send you a ready to go kit) If your build is just your use, then just link it up in two or three sections and then lock them down so they don't wander off.

Many Thanks Gill In edit mode, on the objects tab, you can choose to make the object locked, physical etc. When you choose locked it stays put until you un-check this option. Handy if you are putting in place stuff on a wall and don't wanna accidentally move the wall, for instance. *cough*
