How long does it take you to get back online when you need to relog? It takes me a good two minutes to log out and relog back in, usually more.
Why then do I often get that blue notification that someone on my Friend's List, say, Joe Bloggs, has gone offline, only to be followed within a few seconds of another announcement that he he has now come online??
1. Has Joe Bloggs got his hands on the US Military supercomputer?
2. Has Joe Bloggs got two PCs, linked in some fiendishly clever way?
3. Is it one of the manifold glitches in SL, and Joe Bloggs never logged out at all?
4. Am I dreaming all this?

Usually what happens in cases like these is that Joe B has crashed straight to desktop and has started to log back in before SL has even registered he's no longer online. Then him signing online forces SL to do a "check" of his account/avatar...finding it offline. Thus you get the Joe B is offline message followed by the Joe B is online message.

The other thing is that the blue box pops up to tell you a friend is online before they are inworld. I get the blue box while my partner is on the loading screen, a good 30 seconds before she sees herself in SL.

This is exactly what happens. Yesterday I was hanging out with a friend and she logged off and logged back in simultaneously. I'd be afraid a computer that fast would eventually dominate the world. Your friends are seeing the same thing happen to you from time to time, Rock.

Another possibility is that Joe Bloggs' friends list is showing (waiting) or (hippos) and he's un-checked the visibility box and re-checked it. This is a way to get the friends list to show, and whoever (waiting) is sees you sign off and on very quickly.

I've had the system occasionally block my logging back in for a solid five minutes rather than just fend me off once with the "logging you out now" message. If anyone's found a reproducible way to trigger the five minute timestamp, I'd love to hear it. Sim load? Scripted attachments? High inventory?

I dont like the 5 minute spank, if I crash and then try to re sign on.. I let it say its logging me out then click the icon on my desk top again but I wait until the page fully loads then sign on. Some times that prevents the 5 minute wait for me.

I never immediately relog after crashing so I can't say. I take crashing out as a sign from God to step away from the computer, even if it is just for a few minutes.

Sometimes I am back inworld in under a minute, but no matter how long it takes me, my friends get the blue notification before the login has really completed for me. If I log out, my friends will get the offline notification before my avi disappears from their screen. If I crash, my avi will be gone first and they sometimes won't even get the offline notice, but only the online notice when I come back.

If you crash it takes longer. If you log out yourself you can come back in right away. At least with me it's like this.

I feel sorry for Joe Bloggs and his old computer. Off-On, Off-On, Off-On, Off-On, Off-On... It would simply drive me insane! How can Joe stand it? How can Joe crash so many times a night and still continue to come to SL? Poor Joe

Once I tried to get two avatars online and I logged in with the same account that was already up. SL immediately logged her out and I got the message on the new window that the avatar was already online but the system was logging her out. I think that's the same thing that happens if you crash and your avatar is still in the online status, an immediate re-login tells the system to log out your avatar, and a few seconds later you can log in. I've actually experienced this several times as I've been crashing several times recently.
