I'm trying to make partly-transparent objects, like windows. I'm able to make the texture in Photoshop with transparent parts, but when I apply it to an object the color gets in the way. Is there a way to get rid of the color of an object or somehow set it to "transparent"? I don't see it.

Yeah but then I don't have the texture anymore.

Let's say that I made a texture of a window on photoshop. I made all the glass parts transparent. I upload the image of the texture and select it. But whatever the selected color is in the color box ends up being the color of the "window". I can't select blank for "color"

Save the image as a .PNG file and upload that to SL.

If you are trying to use TGA files, you must create the transparency as a 4th layer and save it as a 32 bit TGA file.

JPGs do not contain treansparent layers and can't be used.

Gnerally PNG is easier but there are times when hand making your own transparency layer and saving as TGA can work better.

Ask this in the building forums, particularly the texture forum.

when you upload it, it shoudl show the transparancy in the preview. if it's white or black, it won't work properly.

something's gone goofy in your alpha settings.... as Dekka said. i'm not very helpful either, but i did find a way to get alpha's to work. i don't remember how tho. sorry.

Photog, are you using an alpha channel? It sounds like when you say "transparent" you mean that you don't have any thing on that particular layer. That's fine, but you need an alpha channel to render the transparency. Otherwise the "color" in the texture tab will show up where the layers are blank. I'm not very good at explaining, but here is a whole forum about textures, and in particular has some very good stickies on alpha channels:

Chosen Few has written the most awesome tutorial to alpha channels on the planet. It's one of the stickies at the top of the page.

Are you applying a colour tone to the texture from the edit window ingame? Use white, that is an 'alpha' base colour. Oh and make sure you choose 32 bit taga, otherwise SL borks the alpha channels.

Simple answer, there is no 'Blank' for colour.

Just make the colour white and it will be fine.
