I run SL on a desktop and a laptop. Tried to log on this morning with the laptop and got:
Login failed Second Life cannot be accessed from this computer. If you feel this is an error, please contact support@secondlife.com
I've never seen this before. Rebooted and cleared the cache - same message.
Tried from my desktop - absolutely fine.
Before I attempt to email SL support, has this happened to anyone else? What does it mean?
Thanks!

That sucks, that is not what a regular user of SL wants to see on their screen.
I would try to uninstall, delete old versions of SL off your computer and re-download and reinstall once more before giving LL a phone call.
Best of luck to you.

Thanks! You've been banned. If you can't even log into the support part of the website, you'll end up have to call LL.

From: Beezle Warburton You've been banned. I don't think so, else he wouldn't be able to log in from his other computer...

From: Novis Dyrssen I don't think so, else he wouldn't be able to log in from his other computer... There's been a rash of bogus hardware bans. I'm not sure if a hacked version of the client griefers are using that has falsified hardware hashes or mac addresses is catching up to the wrong people, or some auto-ban system has been Lindenized. So, it's a misapplied half-ban if you can still log in from another machine.

It seems to be happening also to people who paid other people Lindens for doing work or something like that. The system thinks it means you are gambling, and locks you out.

Thanks folks for your responses.
I haven't done anything I can think of that deserves a ban.
I did run Nicholaz's viewer for a while but I thought it was something SL were happy with it.
Certainly haven't been doing any gambling.
Guess I'll have to email LL...

Same thing happened to me Cosmo. Are you logging in from Germany by any chance? A lot of Germans seem to have had this happen.
I'm using the USB stick that came from my ISP to use with my router (also from my ISP), wondering if that's related or not. The computer that was working all the time with SL is using a somewhat outdated very odd wireless adapter, which is not sold by any ISP in the past to my knowledge. (hell even the company that made it went tits up by now and got sold to another)
I dont know what is happening, but I am sure about this - I havent done anything that would have gotten me banned in SL. No gambling, no payouts to people, no buying lindens from obscure sources, nothing. And none of my accounts, not even my alts, are banned. Only one of my computers I log in from in SL. But it does log in now, someone has apparantly unbanned it.
I suspect something automatic at Linden got bungled, or griefers are spoofing Mac addresses and they're catching up to the wrong computers.

This happened to me yesterday. I suspect it was some kind of hardware ban, but I am unable to confirm this. Here's why I suspect it was a hardware ban. I was unable to log on using any account (I have several). I was able to log on to all the accounts from another PC on the same LAN, same IP address.
I opened a support ticket, and got a very prompt response. The response was "I have reviewed your account details, and you should now be able to log in to Second Life without further difficulties. Try logging into region Aqua or Pooley, as the server for the region you were requesting may have been having problems." I know the region was not down because I was able to go to that region from a different PC, and still unable to log on using this PC. However, after they responded to my ticket, I tried connecting directly to the region "Ahern", and I was able to log in without trouble. I think either there was a problem with the region I was trying to connect to, or there was some kind of hardware ban which they quietly released when they saw my ticket. It doesn't say anything about that in my ticket, so I offer my apologies to LL for the conjecture if I am wrong.
In any case, my recommendation is to try a different region. If that doesn't work, open a support ticket. Seems to clear it up without unreasonable delay.

I just noticed that you said this: From: Cosmo Laszlo Tried to log on this morning with the laptop and got: My trouble was with the laptop, too. The PC on the same network had no such trouble. Its an Asus F3T series laptop.

Are the others PC's you can log in from on the same home network? If no, you should try to force your modem/router to update IP address. You could also try releasing the IP on the PC that is having he problems..type ipconfig ? in a command window for options.
There are only a few ways servers can recognize a specific PC, either by IP or MAC which is essentially the network card's hard coded ID. So you could try to change the card or USB adapter.
You might also want to check if your wireless network has some security and encryption on it. An open or DMZ'd connection might not be kosher with SL.
Also you might have some spyware which is interfering with the ports, try spybot search and destroy to remove it.

From: Cosmo Laszlo No - not from Germany You say it's working again Hypatia? Did you do anything or did it just start working on it's own? I threw a holy fit everywhere i could think of with everyone I could... and I filed a support ticket. It has not been answered, but my computer got unbanned miraculously midmorning CET.

Hmm - good idea whyroc.
I can still get in happily on the desktop. Raised a problem ticket yesterday - no answer yet. Maybe they don't do support at the weekends.
If nothing happens, I'll try swapping the IP addresses between desktop and lappy. If it still doesn't work then that would suggest they are using MAC addresses.
Thanks for all your input folks.

well seems you all are lucky ones. I and my hubby are still not able to get into SL and naturally no respond from LL. We tried to give the router a new IP adress but that had no effect and the MAC adress you can't change. I am pissed must I say I missed a friends birthday party but I was lucky to have written a IM in case I couldn't be there. So he got his birthday wishes. But as I am not the only one and this should have LL niticed.I would have apreciate it when LL would have taken notice to this and told me that they knew the issue and are working on it. My tickets I have written are still on new status. And when I look to the anouncement that the voice will be down tomorrow must anyone be around there. Sorry but I am pissed and maybe I am unfair but for such a community that is growing they should have allways someone reachable for such issues. Maybe they are all in Chicago I dunno *sighs* well enjoy SL for me as I am not knowing when I will be able to step into it again.

You need to go and get another ethernet network card, or wireless dongle etc. I would be surprised if that didn't work. The mac address is hard coded in the card from what I understand.
on a laptop I can see it would be harder to change the card if its built in, a competent pc repair shop would be able to do it... not sure $$
or if you are using a built int eth port you may want to invest in a wireless router and usb dongle
