I thought the forums were going to open up and re-expand.
What happened? Is this still on the schedule?

Let me guess.
You read something in the blog and believed it.
Can you provide a link to any statements to the effects that the forums would be expanded?
Access to the forums was changed a while back from payment info on file only to all sl users. Maybe that was the opening up.

From: Briana Dawson I thought the forums were going to open up and re-expand.
What happened? Is this still on the schedule? I'm surprised they are still here. The few people that have anything of value to add are far outnumbered by the self rightious and vain.

They did open up to the forums to the unverifieds; with no moderation it got bad enough at times already but it's just a matter of time now before it's going to be unbearable.
At that point LL can proclaim the forums dead and close them down with a "moderation doesn't scale" notice and lay the blame with residents rather than itself.

I guess I was wrong.
Well, at least the personal attacks and drama are kept to a minimum.

It was just more Linden Lip Service, In my opinion. And yes,the horror that was allowing all SL users to post here has been a crime of monumental proportions, it been an absolute nightmare since "those people " arrived. But what do I know? I'm self righteous and vain.

It is amazing that they have so many smart people and yet they are ALL TOO STUPID to look through all of the forums, especially the Content Creation forums and see how much good we do. I dare just ONE LINDEN to come here and tell me where else people can look to find the quality of advice available here from so many people like Chip, Ordinal, Talarus, Strife, Void, Winter, Osgeld and so, so many more. As time goes by we have new people that are stepping in to guide others like Dora and Mrc. Where else can people go to learn to Script, Animate, Texture and Build? Torley's stupid videos? I don't think so. Where else can people go and get timely information regarding the state of the grid or get updates as to the lacation of greifer attacks? The blog? Don't think so, it is always posted here a LONG time before any blog entries. The LL forums are a shining beacon, showcasing the help of so many that give of their free time with no thought of recompense. Sure there is a little sniping and tempers may flare every now and then but there is also a great deal of comradarie and goodwill.

One difference between the old days in the forums and now is the number of people involved.
It's hard to have a sensible conversation when a zillion posts get stuck in between the post you are responding to and where your reply occurs.
I think the high degree of fragmentation owing to the larger number of users has reduced the amount of flaming, trolling, baiting, etc., at least percentage-wise. Having a flame fest and a personal attack battle works better when the participants can focus on each other. It's hard to do that with so many people posting.
So that's good.

Yeah, I'd totally agree with that. Sometimes the very best help is not some cynical oldbie, but some noob that just went though the issue themselves, and knows what the solution is. Puts us all to shame

As one of the persons who was very active in getting the Lindens to promise to update the forums, I'm now rather ashamed that I offered them such a temptation to once again promise what they could not deliver.
My only excuse is that I thot a new employee (Katt) could actually do it before their schedule got filled with higher-priority, more internally visible tasks. I was clearly wrong.
I'm disappointed but not bitter about it. (Hides voodoo dolls of Katt and Robin). .

These forums have seriously declined over the years and the inception of resident answers didnt improve things. However if you filter through all the crap there is still allot of good advice here and hard to locate advice is better than no advise IMHO. I still 'scan' the forums every day mainly to find out whats going on in the world and to keep up with current events and problems as quite often LL will take action in world without blogging about it. Also you do get the occasional funny thread that shouldnt be missed and gotta love Brenda's commentary.
So weighing up the pros and cons I think bad forums are better than no forums.

FWIW, I haven't quite given up. I'll try to get to Robin's office hour (Thursday at 2 this week) for another round of whining. But echoing Nika: yeah, were I not so shameless, I'd be embarrassed, too.

From: Desmond Shang Sometimes the very best help is not some cynical oldbie, but some noob Not too long ago I made a reply that would only have made sense if our arms and sleeves had individual textures instead of being mirror images of each other. I got corrected quickly, of course. I'm not a texture maker, but I have opened the templates, and made a t-shirt, and made a skin from a stock wood grain texture, and such. I have in the past known that our arms are symmetrical. However it's been years since I've done it. I just forgot how things work in that respect. I wouldn't be surprised if I forget again in a year or two. So there is value in having a good supply of new folks that haven't been around so long they have forgotten most of what they knew, including specifically the answer to the question they are responding to.
