:0 make a copy (or several copies) of your sl client application on your hard drive.

right-click one of the copies in the os x finder and select 'show package contents'.

open the 'contents' folder that appears, then the 'resources' folder inside that.

open the 'arguments.txt' file found inside that (it'll probably be a blank document by default).

type/copy into that:
-multiple
-login Avatar Name password
(just like that, with leading hyphens '-')

then save, close the windows and open that copy of sl to auto-login as that avatar. :) you cannot start a non-modified client alongside that one, but only a similarly modified sl client, so you would need to mod at least two clients to auto-login in this manner. could maybe just mod one or more with just '-multiple' in the arguments file, i think you'll get the login screen then, but i've always just gone auto-login with them...

Right click on the SL icon, and select "show package contents". Open the "contents" folder, then open "resources". Open the file in there called arguments, add --multiple to it, and save it.

Then make as many copy of the SL application, and launch both of them.

I modify arguments.txt before copying. I have never tried auto-login. I just drag each copy to the dock to make a shortcut.
