Might be useful to know something about the system.
What operating sytem?
What video card?
What version video driver?
What version, including version number, of SL?

It's perfectly normal not to see the hand-shaped cursor when in mouselook. You also won't see the arrow, the dollar sign, the chair, the magnifying glass, or any other of the various other forms the cursor can normally take. The only cursor form you WILL see in mouselook is a tiny aiming sight, a small white box with a circular hole in it, at the very center of your screen.
Most object interactions won't work in mouselook. The only one that will is touch. (Put the aiming sight over any touchable object, and then left-click.) Objects that are set for a left-click action other than touch will be inert to you while you're using mouselook, and neither will right-click. To interact with those kinds of objects and/or to use right-click, go back into standard camera mode.

I should have read the question better and thought of what it was saying.
You can alt click an object in mouselook and get the magnifying glass cursor.
If you press alt and right click the object you get the pie menu.
If you choose edit from the pie menu and let off on alt you can edit while in mouselook. When editing in mouselook, the cursor is the normal editing cursor, an arrow pointing up and left with tiny indicators for position, rotation, or size mode.
If you choose create from the pie menu, you can create objects while in mouselook.
When creating objects in mouselook you get the wand cursor like normal for creation mode.
Do people edit stuff while in mouselook?
I'm not sure if I used to know about this and forgot it or not.
This doesn't have any necessary relevance to the OP's question.
The initial post says there's a difference in behavior between the old new computers. I'm not sure what to make of that.
