Hiya,

Was wondering if anyone knows how I can watch movies from my harddrive in SL. I know I have to use quicktime, but what I don;t know is whether there is a free web server that will host them so they stream, and how I can convert my full length movies to quicktime...Anyone know of free places/programs to do this so I can watch a movie with my honey in SL?

If anyone knows a site that is free where I can watch movies in Quicktime, that would also be useful.

Thanks

Jessica

You may find Free server space.. But a conversion software it highly doubtful. You can always just upload it to YouTube and veiw it that way.

Yeah but can I upload a .avi movie to YouTube that is 700mbs and posssibly infringes on copywright? I mean all of these movies I physically have on dvd but for purposes of uploading to the web .avi makes a smaller file...but when I post it to YouTube then it IS copywright infrigement right?

Help :(

There are many TV Show's posted to YouTube.. You would have to cut things up in segments and there should be a way to turn off public viewing. You won't be profiting from it.. Why not just get yourself a cheap website with hosting and put them on a server?

there are several free converters

avi to mp4
virtualdub
many more just google avi or whatever to mp4

then just upload the file, for movies you can upload full length movies to video.supernova.com but it may just be for divx only you could check.

Anywho convert with freeware to mp4 vid and upload it.

Also youtube has low size limits, but google owns them and remember google had a video site before they owned youtube so you can try uploading the video to

video.google.com <- they do not have size limits, I have several 2 hour vids uploaded to video.google.com.

you can very cheaply rent a site to store stuff at.

I got lucky and I am colocating a server at an isp a friend of mine runs.

finally another tip is using virtualdub you can split your movie into several 100 meg parts, then upload it to youtube and label each part like 1 of 5 / 2 of 5 / 3 of 5 etc. then in second life make a dialog box that drops down to change the media url for each part for you :)

Yes, this is what to do.

1. Get some movies, clips or Youtube videos (try to stay within copyright here)

2. For the Youtube videos get them converted to mp4 format here:
http://youtubemp4.com/

3. Get an account with fileden:
http://www.fileden.com/

4. Upload your videos to fileden, and watch them in SL

Fileden is one of the very few sites to permit direct linking, so once you have uploaded your videos you are given a direct url to access them. Paste this into the Media URL box, and you are good to go.

I made a nice video jukebox with all my favourite music videos in it, and play it in my club on the beach.

IIRC you don't need and streaming, just a converter (www.doom9.org has toolsfor this), but if you do it from your own HD you'll probably at least want to install a simple webserver (there are preconfigured apacheclients available) and use the loopback address to set it inwolrd (127.0.0.1) if you want others to see it too, then you'll want to be sure you have a nice big pipe for upstream bandwidth (most don't) and a freedns acount, so that you can name your webserver something simple

you might also want to limit people on your land watching, and be sure that your ISP actually allows you to run a server. it's an interesting experience if you've got the time to learn about it.

or just host the file(s) somewhere on the web as suggested above, which you might need to pay for
