Cross-manland highway

Hi gang
Seems to me I've read something about a cross-mainland highway being recently completed. Is this true? If so,
- where can I start
- is there a map that covers where it goes
- it seems ideal for a nice long exploring trip for two in a car, motorcycle, bike, or some such.

If there isn't a true cross-mainland road, are there roads that join enough for a failr ly long drive (e.g., more than a couple of hours not including stops?)

Thanks in advance

Not sure it takes quite two hours, but it's pretty long: the Route 1 construction on Heterocera Atoll. See http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Linden_Department_of_Public_Works_Roads for maps of the various routes on the drawing board.

There are several continents, mostly separated by void, so one can't cross all of Mainland by road (or even continuous flying), but at least the three older continents (the ones to the west) all have some roads. I believe the aforementioned Route 1 is the longest continuous stretch of road so far. You can start the journey at http://slurl.com/secondlife/Agirus/92/83/36.

You can expect some disruptions at sim border crossings. Try to take them slow, especially if crossing at a shallow angle instead of head-on. (This can be a problem with multi-passenger vehicles: the driver and the vehicle may continue unaware that the passenger didn't make it across the border.)

It's also possible to travel unpaved roadways (viewing land borders to keep on the right-of-way), but beware: not all streams can be forded. :o

I was looking around yesterday and it seems Route 2 is completed as well.

Yes, and they've been building on the newer continents, too. I'm on the eastern northern one, the name of which I've never been clear on (I gather the western part is Corsica, but...), and was pleasantly surprised by a paved road, a few weeks back.

That would be disconcerting to the passenger, of course. But also, undeniably funny to watch.

You are lucky, I have been waiting 4 years now for a road to go past my mainland plot. I asked a Linden in the summer of 2004 when the road would be built and he said by the end of the year (end of 04). So slightly overdue!

Once mega prims came out i just built the road mysef keeping the root of the prim on my land. Been there for a few years now and they still havn't noticed or bothered to clear the road that is encroaching on the Guv'nors land. Looking at the planned highways schedule I think i will be dead before they ever get there.

Not so sure about a couple of hours, but I'd say the Old Continent is good for one hour at least and offers some pretty nifty scenery along the way (Oh I reckon you could stretch it to two hours with a few stops). Rezzing a vehicle is of course a slight problem, fortunately I used to own some land in Raiden and the avi that bought it from me, I'm delighted to say created a HUGE sand box where you can rezz at will...check out the cross roads at Raiden.

Once mobile you'll find from the map plenty of roads taking you all over the Old Continent (don't pass up the snowy mountain areas they're real fun).

It's a shame the other Continents don't have road networks like the Old Continent as they do create real interest to SL, teleporting is fine but there's nothing quite like driving/flying/sailing/cycling and walking from A to B

There is a Rt 7 and a Rt 7A in Gaeta. Once you walk away from the road (and most land is far from a road), you face ban lines, security orbs, and obstructive walls and a general lack of landscaping that is just sad. Where land is for sale, you can at least walk freely. As of last week, I could walk from my land in Hartley to the road (RT 7). Sometimes it's a challenge just getting to the road.

Only $10L for 24 hours use :)

Look also for "Rez Zone" signs on most of the major new roads. I usually can find a roadside spot on the older ones, too, and my own "parking lot" in front of my Bay City store is set up so people can rez near the end of route 66.

There's a good rezzing area here:

http://slurl.com/secondlife/Koleamoku/189/204/33/

which gives you access to the extensive road network on the old continent.

here's a handy hint: when you end up tangled in ban-lines, or stuck underneath the road (which happens quite easily on the hills in the snowy regions), stay in your vehicle and edit it back onto the road.

Here's the roads I've walked on my home continent, Hetrocera Atoll. The routes may be further along since I last walked along a few of them.......also, I'm going by memory so the exact accuracy may not be what I've outlined. It's close though.

Green is what I've walked over the last few months. And y'all should try walking those roads......it's fun. Several rezzing areas scattered all along the routes too.

Actually, I got sucked into this thread wondering why someone would want to cross Manland without visiting the sights and acquainting herself with the them. Imagine my disappointment that no one commented on it until yours at the thirteenth posting.

Sometimes, ya just gotta stop in Manland, rather than cross it. And sometimes, the concept of "easy exit, convenient on-ramp" for that cross-Manland highway is vital.
