Sorry, but there is no way to block the camera.

Some ideas for privacy...
08-14-2008 10:09
The only way to get privacy in SL is to go where nobody thinks to look.

One way to do this is to build a skybox high in the sky, (with the latest viewer, you can build up to 4000 metres and a bit more) and if you are in a quiet sim away from mainland you wouldn't be troubled with people looking at you very much.. they would have to fly a long way to find you if you were somewhere in that 4000 metres.

Get yourselves a good avatar scanner, so you can see people coming, and a security system that extends a good way off... Make your skybox boring looking from the outside (plywood screens rather than the Taj Mahal).

Another way is to hide your home underwater.

Your green dots can still be seen on the map, so if people know which sim/parcel you are on, they can tell if you might be there. Keep your location out of your picks (don't have photos taken on the site of your home) and make sure you don't give map search privileges to anybody you don't want to come and find you.

imogen

Afterthought......

If you don't want to be recognised by passers by, you can turn off your name title bar, and if you spot somebody in the vicinity on your scanner, you can rezz a large plywood block around yourselves so they can't click on you and read your profile, but this might be seen as a little paranoid...

I would just like to know how it is that you know that someone is camming inside your house?

maybe because once you cam inside you can open doors, switch on lights etc!

If someone is quite a distance from you and wants to cam in, often they will alt-cam (ALT+click to focus on an object) and move in from there. If you enable the Advanced menu, then Character > Show Look At, if someone is alt-cammed on you (or very near you) the crosshairs will show pink. It's no guarantee that once alt-cammed their camera isn't going somewhere else, and you can't tell *who* is alt-cammed on the object, but it's about all I can think of. If someone is much closer and looking inside, the crosshairs could be blue or green, but they *do* show through walls/floors/objects so it's no guarantee that the person is looking inside your home, unless the crosshairs are pretty damn big and right next to you ;)

There is no real privacy in SL...you just manufacture the best illusion of it you can and try not to think about it too much. :)

(Well, unless you have your own island and keep it closed to the public...)

I am bumping you to an 8.5 on the Official Trout Measuring Instrument of Sluttiness. You are an enigma - on the one hand a sweet, gentle, intelligent woman who we would like to wrap up in our arms and protect, and on the other, a temptress to whom we would like to do all sorts of unmentionable things.

Congratulations and shame on you! You are a bit of a slut.

Well, within practical limits I have seen two castles that come very, very close. The living area in one was the third enclosure and the first two were very disorienting due to textures from conflicting support items and short staircases (I know - I spent several hours looking for the hidden chamber which was actually dead-on center of the structure. So you CAN come close, but in both cases you had to start with a lot of prims for the structure only. Not wasted particularly, as they were staircases and extensions of visible items, but still a lot of build wrapped around the living units.

Then you can pretend it's haunted. :)

but the thrid party feels they have rights to peek in and keep a eye on me . So i am trying to make our home cumfy for my GF.:-) anyway now that i now we well put our place up high :-) Would be easyer if SL make it so cam could not cross private Hint hint to LL

Saur, now that this is public information about where you are going to locate your next house... remember, there are some people that are persistent enough to look in the sky as far up as possible just to see what you are up to. I'd suggest always moving your home, or have your private space in an unspecified location. GL with the privacy thing!

If you don't want to be recognised by passers by, you can turn off your name title bar
This only works for your display, others can still see your name and group. There is no foolproof method of hiding your av name. You can switch the active group to "none" though which will show only your av name.

Has this always been the case Gabriele? I have never turned my own off, but I am sure i have seen some avatars without names over them... and had to click on them to see who they were? Is this something no longer available, or did i imagine it all along?

Why not rent someplace else for an inexpensive love nest that the nosy snoop has no idea where you and your GF are. (p.s. dont post it here either)

I think you must of imagined it or it was before my time. You will have seen people without group tags but everyones av name is always displayed to you and yours in optionally displayed to you but always displayed to others.

Small quibble: you can turn this off in your own viewer too, or have them set to only show temporarily, but that only affects what you see.

This is very nice in crowded locations where you can barely see past the sea of name tags.

But you're definitely right about not being able to hide your own name from others.

There is one way to make it slightly more difficult to cam in...

Rez a megaprim around your home. It's nearly impossible to cam into a megaprim. Your camera keeps flipping around to the outside.

(nearly - not totally)

Doesn't have to be a megaprim as such. The camera will always try to focus on the outside of any hollowed prim, mega or not. The advantage of megas in that case is that you can enclose pretty much anything with at most three prims (one hollow cube, two path cut hollow cubes to plug either side of the hole) or only one hollow sphere if you have enough land, and get a structure that is highly tricky (but still not impossible) to alt-cam into.

Unfortunately I can attest it is mighty disorienting to live inside one, because even while you're inside the camera still tries to focus on the outer sides. Eventually I abandoned that practice. :)

No, you're not having a senior moment. I have seen this on other avi's before and it has happened to me as well.
I never figured out what causes it but I am pretty sure that its just a glitch.

The only times I have been able to get it to happen was when I was switching between different avatars and TPing to different sims. And I could never repeat it, it would just happen for no apparent reason.

I have also had it happen when I was wearing a security weapon and have been blasted out of a sim. When I returned to the Sim, I was invisible with no name tag (kinda cool)...but annoying.

So, from my experiences, I would have to say it is just a server side glitch
