Here is one of the applications available to help with that:

http://www.zenentrepreneur.com/secondlife/2007/09/second-life-messenger-faq.html

Be sure and read the FAQ at the link to be sure you have all you need.

Good luck. :)

This item seems to work pretty good too, but you can't receive a response via it.. have to do that through email.

No, I will bet the techies have a block so you can't install software.

Here is another that people use though:

I use the website, www.zonkster.com

The only "hitch" is, before using it, you have to go inworld to Slack Zapedski's parcel at
http://slurl.com/secondlife/Chuginadak/229/247/34

and get assigned your personal code. Once you've got the code, you just use that each time you want to send an IM to someone inworld.

Works great! I get return IMs via email.

I wondered how your IMs looked like you were online but my messages would go to your email. Cool!

Just out of interest, replying to emails seems to be borked now. I sent a few yesterday (replies to new emails - not old ones), and none of them got through.

Never got the reply-to-email thing working for me, so I purchased the hippotell gadget. Since I already use their website for a few other products, its very easy to send my IMs from there. I receive the IMs through email. Not sure about the costs of the system though. Did not care, since it great to have all my stuff on 1 website :-)

You might also want to consider the Message Board approach. You can easily set up a message board in SL, and post messages to it via a webpage.
