Hello,
I'm new to SL (well, I did give it a try 2 years ago for a few days) and I may be missing something, but on a few occasions I've purchased clothing and only receive an object (the poster of the item I want to purchase.) Have I been had or am I missing some "magic" trick?
Thank you,
Li Desoto

You need to pull the box (Object) out on the ground, right-click and choose 'Open.' You'll be given the option to either wear the clothing now, or just copy it to inventory. Also, you need to be in Build enabled area to do this and should either take the box back into inventory or delete it when you're done...just don't leave it there. It's rude. Edit: You might find the video tutorials here helpful: http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Video_TutorialsThis one in particular covers opening boxes (around 3 minutes in): http://youtube.com/watch?v=hQoaQzuqqkY

Congratulations and shame on you! You are a bit of a slut.

Your clothes are packed into a prim, which is the poster you are seeing. Drag the item onto the ground/floor and right click on it. You may see an "Open" option in the pie menu that pops up. If it says "Open" click it and another window will pop up with the options to "Copy and Wear" or just "Copy to Inventory". Choose one of those options.
If there is no "Open" in the pie menu when you right click the object, click on "Edit" and then click on the "Contents" tab in the Edit Menu. The contents of the prim will show there. Drag those contents to your inventory window. (You may also want to create a new folder in your inventory to keep the items sorted and drag the items into the new folder).
Remember to name the new folder something that will help you remember whatever it is you bought.

Not much of a magic trick, I'm afraid... What you have been given is a box with the purchase inside it. Yo need to go somewhere where you can rez the box - drag it out of your inventory and onto the ground. Right cick on the box and choose "open". A little window will open and show the contents of the box which you can then copy into your inventory. When you have done that, right click on the box again and either take or delete it. [EDIT - Ann and Sansarya beat me to it ]

one of the problems with Orientation Island, there you click on a chain mail vest it appears in your inventory and you click wear. there is no option to teach how to buy a box, rez it and open for the contents, this may be partly to do with the fact your not allowed to rez on Orientation Island too, which I never understood, it one of the most important things to learn and in effect they ban it.

...and that is, why I always try to get New residents going to help island, when they ask me how they can quit Orientation Island, which is in fact one of the most asked questions there.
On the Help Islands they have the possibilities to learn this skills, even though I agree, that it might be boring to go through all that. We all are learning by doing and what is so great about SL, is that there are people around you can ask for help...like here!
Happy Easter!!
