I was wondering how often does linden labs put out new last names to pick from when you make a new account. Does anyone know?

I don't think there is a fixed interval between new name offerings.

There's a place that monitors names at http://slnamewatch.com .

On the front page, click the "Days Active" heading twice to sort the list of active names by most recently added names first. Join the mailing list to get an email within one hour after new names are added. They are added in batches of variable size. A little over 300 were added on 2007-10-22. New names are expected any day now...
Also, CSI-NY has its own list of last names, but it has never changed as far as i know. You can see this alternate list by clicking on "[Active-Alt Only]" on the right.

Avenues to retrieve a retired name?

Is it possible? Would like our kids to have the same surname, but its now retired. So I'd really appreciate some feed back on the feasibility thereof, &/or ways of accomplishing same. Thx!

Well I think you can also register the CSI:NY names if you want. Just go to their website, register and then continue using SL....
otherwise just be patient until LL rotates the names again. Its 100 days now since the last rotation.
