Problem with Deeded Item

So I deeded a radio to the group which holds my land. Now I find that I cannot edit the script or the playlist card. I've tried taking it, and putting it back down, so that I'm the owner again, and I still don't have permissions to those files. Any thoughts?

Thanks!

Almost off-the charts slutty. Shame on you and congratulations. -- Trout

try this:
create a prim.
create a 'new script' inside of it.
set perms to no mod/no copy.
deed it to group.
take it back from the group.
you will find you can no longer mod or copy it.

when you deed an object to group and take it back, you inherit the 'next user' permissions, even if you created it yourself or it is full perm.

edit: maybe explain the mistake to the person that created the radio. if you can still transfer it theres a chance they will exchange it for you.

when you initially tried altering the notecard were you wearing your group tag?
remember that once something is deeded to group you no longer own it; the group does.

Also, for a notecard inside a deeded object, try editing its properties and checking Share with Group. This should allow you to edit it while wearing that group's tag...assuming the object and notecard are mod of course.

For future reference: Is there actually a reason to deed an object to the group, as opposed to just "setting" it? I've heard deeding objects is normally only used for group sales.

I don't think a radio will work on group land unless you deed it.

Oh, I see. Does it need that for permission to change the stream or something?

There are a number of script functions that will only work if the owner of the script matches the land owner (unsitting an avie, pushing on push restricted land, access/ban list removal/adding, media functions, etc). For group-deeded land that means the group has to own the object in order to work.

You'd also need to deed an item to the group if you wanted to get money into a group (to prepay the L$30/parcel fee for places for instance) for some odd reason.

I did. I tried editing it as the owner, but still couldn't open the notecards. So I've made it worse by taking it. Hrmph.

Thanks all, I'll try those suggestions.

put the radio back out on a small plot of group land - 16m plot
Sell that land to yourself for $0 with "include objects in sale

object is now owned by you again.

When you deed something, you're transferring ownership of that item from you to someone (something in this case) else. It's no different than giving that item to another resident, next owner permissions will apply as soon as you deed.

You won't be able to retrieve the script (although it might still be in your inventory with its original permissions on the beta grid depending on when you created/bought it, so you could go check there) if the permissions on it changed, but you could salvage the notecard. Even if you can't open the notecard due to lack of permissions, a script will be able to read it (have the script dump the lines one by one and then create a new notecard with the same contents and remember to set "M/C/T" for next owner).

This is why you'll sometimes see radios that come in two pieces: one you retain ownership of, and another that you deed to group. The first contains notecards and the main script, and when you use it to select a new stream it communicates to the second (deeded) object which actually sets the parcel stream.

I'd recommend looking for one that works like this. I made one, but unfortunately it's part of a security package with lockable doors and windows and such, so it comes with a bunch of junk you wouldn't need (and the stream tuner itself is quite basic compared to some of the nicer full-featured ones I've seen).

Aha! Changing the script perms to "share with group" made it editable again.

Thanks!

Radios, multimedia video systems, and security systems all have to be deeded to work on group land, because they need 'owner' permissions for the parcel in order to function.

In most cases, you can drop a new notecard into a deeded radio or DVD player, to change the station list, and the script will recognize the newest card named "Stations" or "Movies" as the one in control. Ditto for access list cards in security systems. As long as you have modify rights for the deeded group's objects.

It is a good idea to make copies of any configuration cards before deeding these items, just in case you have issues later.
