Hello everyone!!
Computer newbie here, hehe
Been having a little problem lately - well, last couple of days. I don't have Windlight yet and I'm still with version 1,18,3(5). I'd like to fix this before doing anything else...
I've been in SL since September (not always inworld, mind you) and haven't had any issues. My sreen - what I'm actually viewing - is shaking ever so slightly. Driving me insane, especially when I need to edit something. Someone told me that maybe I should wipe my Hard drive and reload because it might be a virus. This could be but I have a MAC so maybe not. Before I do this (since I don't even know how LOL maybe my next forum question) I just wanted to make sure it wasn't something really simple that I've overlooked. Again, all has been fine until now - no lag or crashing, etc

Thank You Kindly :)

Is the shaking only visible in SL?

Make sure your monitors cable is securely attached to the CPU, and not loose.

Not sure if this is relevant on a Mac, but on a PC if you have the refresh rate low on the graphic card settings you will get an effect that could appear to be jitteriness to the screen.

Is your monitor sitting next to any other electrical stuff? My one computer monitor is sitting next to my TV and it gets wavy and makes me real sick after about an hour. Found out that it was normal for this to happen and i would have to move the tv or monitor.

Yes Jannae,
Only in SL. But I'll check my connections all the same - never know... Thanx

As SL drives graphics adapters harder than just about anything, you may be seeing the impending death of your graphics card.

As components age, they move slowly out of their specification and you may be seeing jitter in the analog output stage of the adapter. If all the other suggestions have no effect, I would suggest swapping your graphics card with another to see if that helps.

Unfortunately, a failed graphics card can actually take down the motherboard with it. I've seen at least one system where a blown GPU caused enough current to short through the motherboard to cause the AGP control chip to break also.

Good luck.

Hmmm... You're scaring me, I sure hope not. It's brand new (May'07)
I'm not sure what information is important but here goes:

2 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
1 GB Memory
ATY, RadeonX1600

And because it's new - not much inside that's big except SL :)

Is your view bouncing up and down slightly? If so, lock the camera onto something nearby and view your AV. I bet you'll see that it is actually bouncing up and down slightly. I've had this problem off and on for a while, as have other people I know, and the cause is always related to something attached to either the AV or the HUD. As for the specific cause of it, we have no idea and LL's "support" was, well, as useful as it ever is for us which is to say once they give their little stock "clear cache, reinstall SL" speech they are utterly uninterested in actually diagnosing the actual cause of this.

OMG!!! Thank You so much Talon!!!
It was my MystiTool (a freebie I got cause everyone was raving about its uses). I got it a few days back and forgot all about it. I can't believe I've been jumping up and down these last few days and all along it was something so simple. It feels great to be back to normal!

Thanx everyone for taking the time to help :) :) :) :)

Well I wasn't trying to scare you, caution yes. :o

Without actually seeing the jitters you describe, it is next to impossible to diagnose. At least it should still be under warranty in case of failure, and you have an idea as to what might have caused it which may come in handy when no graphics card works in it.

Also, the failure rate of hardware components over time looks like a wide U with a high rate of "infant failures" early in the operating life, a low rate for the middle of the lifetime and then an increasing rate at the end of the useful life.

I'm not sure if that leaves you any less scared.

Isabeau, this happens to me if I leave myself logged in for long periods of time, like if I log in and then leave for work (8 hours.)

I don't wear any unusual attachments, but I've found that logging out and back in seems to fix it. If it doesn't, I'll clean my cache, and that works as well. I figure my computer's just tired and needs a change. ;)

hmm...

i thought this happened in skyboxes or on platforms up in the air. thought it was the wind shaking stuff up there. :X it doesnt seem to happen on the actual ground.

actually, i thought it had to do with the little collision detection buffer between an avatar and a prim one was standing on. but i will have to check attachments, hmmm....

Yes, its' caused by scripted attachments. If you want the technical explanation, it's caused specifically by Linked Messages and the overuse of LINK_SET to send those messages to every prim in the item. I've spent a great deal of time to minimize this in my items and found using LINK_THIS as much as possible helps a lot.
