If I were you I would look to rent office space. Do a search in world. Then you can use it and get a better idea of what you need before committing to buy.

And after renting for a bit, start going thru some building tutorials and/or classes -- search for NCI or look for classes in the Events.

George,

All buildings (office buildings and everything) are made of prims. Prims are basic geometric shapes. You can create and edit them yourself...or, if you want to save time, you can buy a pre-made building from someone else. Do a search on "prefabs" and "commercial buildings" using the Places/shopping tab in the search window, or look on XStreetSL.

Once you have made or purchased your building, you need land to put it on. The land must be large enough in square meters to fit your structure, and must also have enough prims to let you rez your building there. A 512 meter square parcel supports 117 prims.

You can buy land, or you can rent it. Depending on where your land is, it may be zoned by the owner, so check to be sure it's suitable for your application.

Or you can rent office space in an existing building.

We can give you more specific advice if you tell us what you want to DO with your office.

There are SIMs that are dedicated to renting out office space, they are designed to look like modern office buildings. I think I have a land mark to one if you want me to send it to you for a look see.

Thanks for the information guys. Soo if you've bought land on your own you can build there without paying taxes or something? And is it too expensive to just go and buy a building (in some place that people can see it of course ) or to buy land in such a place, where people often go ? By the way what would it cost aproximately to make a big poster like an announcement in some popular area . If someone cares to help id be very glad :)

Hi George;

Use search/places and type the word 'sandbox.' Those are areas in which either Linden Lab or a resident of SL has allowed others to build for free on their land.

I advise going near the bottom of the 'traffic' list (traffic numbers indicate roughly how many avs go there and how long they stay; with a bit of pixie dust thrown in). Just keep paging down the list until you are near the bottom. Those sandboxes will be much quieter.

Sandboxes are a wonderful resource but also tend to attract 'griefers' who seek to disturb others while they build.

I also advise reading the rules for each sandbox (and each place you go in Second Life, if there are any) so you don't inadvertently put a foot wrong and perhaps even end up banned (from that place.) Basically, though, just be considerate of others, and also pick up what you built when you go (name it first, so you can find it again in your inventory at a later point.)

As for buying your own land, if you look at 'tier' as land tax, the only land without tier is the 512 size lot which a premium membership offers free tier upon. You must still find a 512 size lot to buy, and purchase it from another resident. You can find those in the land sale tab in search.

A 512 isn't very big and isn't that easy to build on, at least not the size building you seem interested in.

NCI for building classes, as others have said. Look up their group in search/groups, and join. They announce classes regularly. They also list their class schedule online here:

http://www.nci-sl.org/blog/?p=326

If you copy and paste that address, omit the question mark on the end.

George,

A 512 should hold a one or two room office quite nicely. It is quite possible to slap together a box, yurt (round shaped house), pocket home (flattened tube with one end sealed and one end partiall sealed) etc... in a sandbox or a variety of other shapes including pole barns and platforms. None of these use a lot of prims and you can paint or texture them as you wish.

Owning a 512 on mainland is cheaper than renting. My "office" such as it is these days is a bench in my garden.

Maybe those sandbox owners have restricted building rights to group members as an anti-griefing measure?

Which sandboxes, George?

There are sandboxes all over the place where anybody can build. For example if you go to the Skybeam sim there's a public sandbox right in the middle of the sim, you'll land right in it. If you can't build in that sandbox there's a very major issue with your account that Linden Lab is going to have to debug.

Have you tried building anyway, by right-clicking the ground (or an object) and choosing "create" from the pie menu? It could be your viewer is slow in reflecting the fact you've moved from a no-build area to one where you can. I've noticed that sometimes when I've tried to build somewhere I arrived using the wrong tag.. I can still build by using the pie menu (and rez stuff from my inventory) as soon I change my tag, but the build button sometimes takes time to appear, despite this.

George,

Keep in mind that there are two ways of renting land: from Linden Lab, or from another resident.

If you rent land from Linden Lab, you must be a Premium member, and are allowed to rent ("own";) up to 512m for free - you only have to pay the initial land purchase price to someone else selling it. Over 512m requires a monthly payment in US$ to Linden Lab - this is called "tier" and many view it as a basic land tax. If you don't pay your tier, Linden Lab will take back the land. Benefits include complete autonomy - build whatever you want, within the strictures of PG, Mature, and Adult land ratings. You can terraform your parcel - dig holes, build hills, whatever. No zoning restrictions re: types of buildings.

If you rent land from another resident, you do not need a Premium membership. You will pay a monthly sum, usually in L$, to the landlord. You will have to pay for any sized parcel - even under 512m. Benefits include zoning restrictions (no one can put up a big club right next to you), maintaining a basic (non-Premium) account, and the knowledge that Someone Else is responsible for the land.

Both types of rentals do have shortcomings. Like others have said, probably your best bet is to start off renting from a resident. Figure out what you want from your parcel. To find parcels for rent, Search under Land Sales, and specify Rent.
