our setup has not changed in over a year and now SL will not let people hear the stream through the client. With direct connection through to the ip they can though. so now wondering what has changed.

Try plugging your stream's address directly into the Media tab in your land settings, to determine if it's a problem with media streaming on your land, or a problem with your in-world media selector.

Ive replugged it serveral times. tryed it on our other sim too and it can not be heard there either. but if we direct connect to the ip then we can, so seems sl is borked.

The SL viewer hasn't changed in the past week, so there must be something different about the stream. On the testing outside SL, it's probably best to test with QuickTime Player or iTunes. QT is where compatibility really matters, the sim's only role is to tell the viewer "this is the stream URL" but the viewer and QuickTime do everything else.

Can you post the media URL (or pass it in IM if it's one you don't want the whole world playing) for playing around purposes?

Both parcel audio and media settings seem to be working fine for the stuff I normally try. If the stream host hasn't changed anything to specifically block the SL viewer (not even sure if doing that would be practical really) it's a puzzle. Is there anything unusual about the stream URL, like it's longer than most, or has unusual characters in it? Especially, if you close and re-open the about land window, do you see anything change? That's really the only opportunity the sim would have to muck up a stream, if it somehow clobbered the URL when storing or sending it back to the clients.
