When the heck is LL going to get around to supporting SL on the nVida TESLA personal supercomputer?

It's only ten thousand dollars.

960 cores, 250 times faster than a PC.

Maybe it could reduce gray textures and get objects to render before you've left the area.

Get a move on, LL!

;)

ooh, why not one of the top 5 supercomputers (easily 1000 times faster then the tesla), costs only 1Mln USD and then you can run the whole grid and future expansion from it, with ultimate power..
(that is, excluding the bandwidth capacity, that this SL system is mainly relying on ;))

Because this is a personal computer that sits on your desktop.

Extremely expensive, large, difficult to maintain "supercomputers" that don't run normal software have been around a long time, and folks have made playful suggestions to implement software such as Second Life on them for all of that time. There's usually at least one response from someone with no sense of humor who points out the technical problems with what was really just a joke.

Desktop computers with this much processing power at a price that is getting down to realm where a person might actually buy one, that take no special mainenance, don't need special air conditioning or have absurdly large power requirements, etc., are something new.

The joke suggestion might not be such a joke for too long.

It's not optimized for things like openGL. Infact openGL drivers do not, and probably will never exist for it. It's not a matter of LL supporting it.

It is designed for and excels in other things.

Other things like making a great server. I had wondered in the past if LL had gotten around to testing one in their asset system. I do know that WOW is not comparable in any shape or form to SL but they were able to recently host 1 million users on a single super computer.

Blizzard uses separate servers for each of it's realms. Each one only has a concurrency of about an average of 1000 users.

Are you sure it was not CCP with EvE Online you are thinking about? They recently hit a 1 million mark on there supercomputer.

If the price drops sufficiently for machines on this nature people will start wanting to buy them for home use and applications like games and virtual worlds will start to appear.

I just want to know when I can get SL running on a CRAY-1

Parts of Tron were rendered on this bad boy.

Does it come in avacado green, too?

Your cell phone is probably faster than that "bad boy".

Just think of how awesome you'll look sitting on it while you're wearing your Nehru jacket.

WOW:

http://www.massively.com/2008/07/02/world-of-warcraft-and-the9-make-china-s-top-ranked-super-compute/

EDIT: Reading with my feeble mind again, the original I read didn't say 1 million concurrent on a single server. But they do use super computers as servers and in fact The9 boasts 10% of the super computing power in China.

Now, just imagine what a Beowulf cluster of those would do for the SL viewer!

Remember, in Soviet Russia, Beowulf cluster of Teslas render YOU!

Oh.. wait...

If its a "Super Computer" it seems to me that is the obligation of the creator to make it so it can run things like SL, not the other way around.

Clearly is a "niche" market.

I see now the instructions on building your own Tesla personal supercomputer.

http://www.nvidia.com/object/tesla_build_your_own.html

It only costs 8,500 bucks and it can run either Linux or Windows XP 64 bit versions instead of some oddball operating system.

I wonder if you can run normal applications on it, so it would actually be useful "out of the box" as regular desktop computer.

You would fill it with Virtual Machines of any kind then one could host a host of grids on those.
