Hi everybody, I just bought up some ad farms to help clean up the mainland.

The ad cutter is there right now and he owns the land next door so i think he may do the same thing.

I have heard of clocktowers provided by the arbor project, how can i get one ASAP and have hihs name added?

Is that even allowed considering he owns more land in the sim than I do?

I don't really think you can do anything to him on his own property though...

I think the clocktower thing only works on your own land, so I don't quite understand it yet. I'd like to understand more about the whole process myself. I joined the Arbor Project group, but haven't done anything yet. I did buy up a bunch of 16 m plots and planted trees. The plots also line protected land, and I hope to buy more, but I won't pay outrageous amounts and I refuse to go over my next tier.

More info on Project Arbor and the Clocktower list can be found at...

http://arbor.npl.com/

The clocktower was originally created to hide 16 sqm ad plots. The builder owned the land surrounding the ads so he built a clocktower to hide them. I don't think the building itself is for sale but I've copied the idea myself for a friend just by building a brick tower around the bit of her land she doesn't own (it contains big spinning ads going up into the sky for a club). The tower sits on her land but hides the ads.

The clocktower project is a 'black list' of known land-cutting advertising folks who put up the big spinning ads on 16 sqm plots. You can get, for free, a device that you place on your land which automatically bans people on the list from your land. As I understand it, the aim is to make their SL experience more unenjoyable and hence encourage them to stop creating these plots.

I think James (Gill - the original creator of the Clocktower) made a free Clocktower kit available - I may have one in my Inventory - if you IM me I'll have a look when I'm back in-world later on.

I also have lots of freebie textures which you can use as screens to hide the offending ads which I'll happily pass on.

If you don't like what Ad Farms do to the Mainland (it sounds like you don't!) *please* vote for

Forgot to say - there are also some Arbor Notecards which you can give out which explain why they shoudln't cut land. It may be a bit late by the time I get in-world, but if you join the Arbor group, and send an IM, hopefully someone else can help you.

Re your question, yes, you can do what you like on your land.... (as the ad farmers are happy to quote back at you). You can build what you like, and Ban who you like...

My new neighborhood is ugly. It's so sad. :( I own 2460 m of land there. Not all conjoined. I was sick of looking out my windows,so I put up a bunch of pretty trees today.Strategically blocking my view of any eyesores, lol. I have an ad cutter right next to one of my plots. If the prices they were charging weren't so insane,I'd buy them out.(plus then my tier will go up.) For now I have a bunch of huge redwoods on that side of the property covering the ads.:p

I've bought up adfarm plots before, too, but kinda stopped. I always bought only the cheapest ones, which are always the ones already surrounded by other ad plots, but even so: paying for them is kinda subsidizing the very activity I want to stop.

I've also stopped putting up visual screens in front of the ads. Instead, I have an ultra-thin prim that I put on the very edge of my property next to the ad plot; when the owner clicks it, it goes fully transparent. When anybody else clicks it, they get a message warning about ad farms, a landmark and map to the Arbor Project location, and a Clocktower Network probe kit. It's available for free just outside my barn, at . Because the ad plots are so small, it's pretty likely that anybody tempted to click the ad will instead get the prim, so at least that click-thru won't benefit the adcutter, and just might make a convert to the Arbor Project.

stop buying ad plots = no money to land splitters =

Simply pick up and move... put the money you would spend on buying ad land, and buy something better. New sims open daily.

Honestly, the worst thing that enables ad-splitters is people that own roadside selling much too low.

I bought a few, next to my half of a sim (on another sim but roadside and right next to my place). this was a town home rental spot before it was sold off. I bought the ones in the center of the cut lot and put a root prim on mine and a giant sculptie apple, well I know just more blight but the apple is better than XXX adds and earn L by caming adds. the apple has been up a month now and no issues with anyone no ARs, if I could figure a better screen I would do that, hind site I should have bought 4 outer on each side and built a huge prim clock tower wall on each 16 on each side

And I am not anti adds or XXX or click to earn stuff.. but the add farms have to go.
When I first arived in SL I actully found some of the road side "billboards" a real world touch they were scalled nice and built well with landscape and trees as well. the darn spinning tall things really SUCK!!!!! and when you run camera distance at 512 it really gets sad.

Edit" Sammy they get $ from renting the add space and click through add stuff. well some if you pay the 30000L they want I supose make $ but if its over 200L I wont buy it out.

If you have ad farms next to your parcel, put up signs next to them... go see Birchwood/30/224/85/ for an example. If you want a free sign to use (full mod/copy/trans), go into the red brick building and click the sign.

Isn't buying ad-farm land just giving those ad-farmer types a reason to continue?

I have one 512 plot that I basically just bought because of the prims.(Now I realize I don't really need the prims.) I want to turn it into a garden of sorts to pretty up my neighborhood. Does anyone know of good quality garden shops?I went to SL wildlife/Garden(? I forget the name) and bought some pretty ones last night, but I need more.:) I would also prefer ones with copy flowers, since I already paid about $L200 on only 8 flowers, lol.

Yes, exactly.

Best thing to do to stop ad farms is to explain to the naive that buying ad plots to put up ads will not help them bring in more business.

And for those bothered by the eyesore is to ignore them.

A gress roots idea that would be more effective against adfarms would organize and get the word out of the many reasons NOT to buy adfarm parcels.

This is kind of a different thread, but... one thing to keep in mind is that Linden plants are 1 prim each, and by some voodoo magic, they seem to be a bit less susceptible to the "alpha-sorting problem" (in which overlapping partially-transparent textures appear to "fight" to be on top of each other)--but at the expense of some very strange Level of Detail rendering phenomena. Copy- or full-perm flowers are hard to buy, but surprisingly not all that difficult to make. If one has fairly basic Photoshop or Gimp skills, a search for public domain/Creative Commons-licensed photos at Flickr or from commons.wikimedia.org will turn up nice plant images that can be pretty readily filtered and trimmed for upload as textures with which to make one's own plants, in infinite number.
