Why does this happen only in certain areas?

For a few weeks now when I get to certain places I crash. Now, I'm aware this happens to everyone but to me there are places I just can not stay on because I will continue to crash every time I log back in. The bad part is it's happening more frequently now.

Last night I went to an event I had been looking forward to attending but after about 10-12 crashes I finally had to leave. I cleared cache and tried everything I could but nothing helped.

I went to other places as I was fighting trying to stay logged in at this club and I was fine wherever else I went to but at this one club I continued crashing. It's also happened in other places such as a shop I went to a day or two back. It also happen at a friends house. This isn't happening everywhere I go, it's just happening in certain areas only.

Anyone know what you can do to help out when this happens? Have you gone thru' this too?

Thanks

sounds as though your gpx card is not up for the rendering of all the avatars at these bigger events, and or your cpu/bandwidth... list your computers specs and you may get a good answer, you can use the SL UI to show by using Help and about SL it will list all of the info .

Edit to add, I never really have crash issues, I do have soft crash at times (I stay on SL but cant comunicate or do anything but spin, this happens while preforming a lot.

but never like what you describe... take that back on my lap top that happens ( I think I fried the gpx on it from playing SL on it.)

Im crashing too. Basicly the Avatar freezes, can turn around, but no other controls work. Any sounds or particles effects seem to continue, and all other avatars either freeze, or if walking, apear to continue walking in a straight line, off world. If left, the mini map apears in red after 5 minutes or so.

When trying to relog, you will usually get an error message, ''region has begun the logout process'', and you have to attempt a login again.

I have it so bad, I am about to sell my inventory and leave SL. Its just not worth the hassle anymore, which is as I will be leaving friends, and my inventory of lovely aircraft and cars behind.

I see no reason to stay if I get this every 3 minutes (now less) of SL time. The IM chat goes down too when I freeze :(

I've noticed this is happening more often lately. I crashed several times last night and this only happens to me rarely. I suspect this problem is related to network performance. For some reason, our network connection is been interrupted and we loose cohesion. Are you sharing internet connection with someone else? I found that my roommate was spending long hours sharing my connection while I'm in SL recently and my internet connection couldn't handle the load.

Viper and Cole, have you tried lowering your preference levels on edit/preferences? I know it's a silly question, but it definitely can affect performance. Lower your bandwidth level to roughly half of your connection speed (I've got cable internet and I still lower my bandwidth to 700 or so; cuts down on packet loss), minimize particles and draw distance, turn off streaming video, and on graphics details, turn off bumpy, ripple, etc, and drastically reduce rendering. My tree render is set to 0, for example, coz I honestly don't care if I see trees in all their leafy glory. There are a LOT of settings that you can minimize to make life better.

Also, you can reduce lag in the sim that you're in by not wearing all kinds of scripted stuff. Take off that scripted bling, which even when off, is still listening for you to talk to it. Take off the color change shoes. Take off scripted weapons, reduce prim attachments (yeah that 250 prim flexi hair is pretty, but guess what? Lag!) and just generally pare down attachments when attending crowded areas.

Hopefully some of this will help.

I get this same type of crash every 40 to 50 mins or so... it happens at the worse times. One of my friends has started calling me yoyo man... :)

Don't think its a gfx card issue or hw issue... I have a fairly high powered nvidia card (top of the line gaming card 6-7 months ago) a 3GHz Processors and plent of RAM.

I cannot find a common reason... sometimes it happens when I load something on the hud... or when there is network activity thru my router... I am starting to wonder if there are issues with the network switch or the router...

Any network experts out there?

Also, wondering if the Linux client is more robust than the Windows one... would be willing to set up a dual boot system if it would not crash so often.

The problems that we are experiencing seem to be localized and are related to Server Communication problems.

Take a look at the stats Ctrl+Shift+1 and watch the "Ping Sim" numbers. It will jump from say 75 msec to a whooping 4,000 to 10,000 msec and even more.

That is the length time your keystrokes take to reach the server. 10,000 msec, for those that don't know, equals 10 seconds.

That is why you don't move or when you do, you just keep walking because the stop command has not yet reached the server.

This has been going on for several weeks and as far as I can tell, not widespread. If it is, not many people are complaining about it.

Therefore, I don't think this will be on the top of LL's priority list! :(

This happened to me for the first time last night. One other time a couple of weeks ago, I noticed a neighboring region show red on the mini map.
