Hi all.
Can someone please tell me whether two items - textures, anims, prims, whatever - which have differing names (collected freebies from different sources), will have differing UUIDs if they are all derivations of one original item?
If they're the same, as it's LL's way of pulling that item from the server and the name is purely for user conveniance, is there any way of using UUIDs to filter inventory to highlight duplicates so that I can slim down my ever expanding collection of 'must keep' items.
Thanks
Textures, sounds, and animations can't be "changed" once uploaded. so they always retain the same UUID, regardless of what their name or description or permissions are set to.
Objects, Notecards, and Scripts get new UUID's every time they're altered. Linden Lab can in fact trace them back to their original UUIDs, and they can block all "derived items" from a given branch, bbut it's resource consuming and honestly, they only do it when it's a DMCA type issue.
Clothing elements and body parts CAN be altered, (with the appropriate permissions of course) but I don't know if saving them generates a new UUID. (it probably does).
Attachments may, or may not get new UUIDs from time to time. The exact times when they do and don't is kind of hit or miss (not on wear, yes on relog). this was something we used to have to do when moving "delivery boxes", wear it from the ground, tp to the new location, drop.. crashing during that tp was devastating!
Unfortunately, you can't search YOUR inventory by UUID.. and frustratingly, unless the object is full permissions, there are limitations in terms of whether or not you, or even your scripts can access the UUID's (scripts sometimes can check, if you place the items in a box).
You may just be better off setting your avatar up in a box 300m over a sandbox, and start rezzing things if you don't know which one is which. Make some folders, or some inworld "safes" (or use an inventory organizer tool (you might find one on XstreetSL)... and just sort it all by hand.
All I can say is "Good Luck!"
Hopefully someone with more experience can chime in.. my inventory would not exactly be called "organized"
One thing you can do, on your inventory window, click "Sort>" and set it up to sort "by date", with folders always by name. This will allow you to see which inventory items are "newest" just by looking at which one is on top of the list. This isn't foolproof because creation dates have drifted before, but it's about 98% reliable.
