hope someone can clarify for me...
Im going to bite the bullet and buy a void sim to see how it performs etc...ive been told that when i buy it, its a good idea to name the estate differently than the one my other sim is in ie: faithless babii estates is the one now, the new one faithless babii estates 1- for the new one. Apparently it makes it safer for estate managers NOT to return stuff from both estates not just one (but i always get a message about which estate i want to do things on anyway, so that threw me)
Can anyone think of any other reasons why this mioght be a good idea? or not?

I keep them on the same estate just so it is easier to place bans for all sims at once.

The only reason I set up islands under a different estate name is so I can safely give the tenant estate controls. I only have one OS sim like this and it gives the tenant complete control. But does not give them control over any other sims in the main estate.

If you gave a tenant estate controls they have power over your entire estate. If you put the OS sim in a different estate, you can be more liberal with the estate powers for that OS/estate. OS sims almost don't need to be managed if the tenant has estate controls, and it gives them the power to texture the land(which seems most important). But you wouldn,t want to hand over that power over your entire estate, so you start a "sub-estate" babii) just for your new OS. This may not seem important now, but when the tenant asks for estate controls you wil be glad you did.

From: Faithless Babii hmmm ims till not understanding why its a good idea to call the estate something different...but then its quite late here in the uk lol It's good to set the estate to something different, otherwise global estate controls will set all your regions to night time, or telehub on, or private all at once with no separation of powers. Same with estate managers, they will be all regions or none. Having any trouble testing in that region we talked about? You've got access to script debug windows and all that - just load it up with 'stuff' and people and see how it does! I won't be needing the region back until next weekend or so.

I once had a full sim rented out to one person. It was on the same Estate as my other 2 at the time. He had a nightclub, and kept setting the sky to night. It affected the other 2 sims. Once the nightclub sim was put on it's own estate, there were no more problems.
As for OS's, as others have said, it's safer to give the renter control over just that one sim, rather than ALL sims in an estate We make them an EM, then we go over the estate tools with them.
Edit: Geez Desmond! you type fast!
