Is a bit of Shameless Self-Promotion still frowned upon here?

I know from time to time people have started threads about something or other that they were very happy, proud, or excited about. And I know sometimes that sometimes the threads seem to be well-received and maybe get some good feedback, kudos, etc, but they are also occasionally attacked because in the end they are after all just a bit of self-promotion.

As I am not as active in these forums as I once was (and was never all that active anyways) I have not had enough experience to know why some such threads are accepted while others are frowned upon. I suspect though, that it comes down to popularity -- if the OP is well-known, well-liked, or generally admired, the threads probably get a pass, while those who are maybe not so popular will not get the same amount of leeway. And really, I have no doubts about which of those two groups I would fall into. :)

So, if I were to come along into RA and proudly announce that not only is my little estate Waikiti a mere month away from celebrating its 2nd anniversary, but that we were recently chosen by the Meta Makeover tv show (from the same people as the Prim Perfect magazine) as the "Most Romantic Place in SecondLife", would I come under fire for posting something like that? What if I included a link to the show, like this:
http://www.slcn.tv/meta-makeover-waikiti

Would that earn me the ire of the forums, or would it be ok? I'll prepare to duck, just in case...

Personally I don't think it's a problem Atashi, because you are normally a constructive and modest poster and deserve an occasional 15 minutes of fame.

It *should* earn you some congratulations.

Congratulations and well done!

I don't know what the rules are, Atashi, but congrats on both your estate's second anniversary AND on Waikiti's selection as Prim Perfect's choice for the "Most Romantic Place in SecondLife"! :)

I think it is quite apparent which group you fall into, whether you realise it or not.

Pep (Congratulations - I will put it on my "to visit" list, in the unlikely event that I find someone who might wish to be romantic with me!)

I think it's fine, and congratulations.. For me it is only an issue if a person makes their first post here and does it in a manner that is nothing but blatant advertiseing, there is a forum for that. But as far as I am concerned once you have one genuine post under your belt, you are a regular. There are just degrees of regularity.

Once again I'll be the contrarian here. I don't think this is the appropriate place for a post like that because the OP is essentially using RA as an advertisement.

It would be acceptable if you posted something inane and celebratory like, "WOOHOO about to celebrate my 2nd anniversary with so-and-so sim!"

Many past blatantly self-promotional threads like that have been embraced( "That Haystack Stallion is Hot" — of course started by Haystack Stallion)

But the line that is crossed for me is when you expect to receive directly or indirectly monetary gain for you or your product or your region. (See "Hello Nikki";)

I don't want to make a big deal about it... just wanted to clarify how I see it.

I interpret the OP differently, Alvaro, as saying is "Yay, I did it!", as she has already succeeded and does not need to beg for money here. I interpret it as a happy success story... something we see so rarely on these forums. It made me smile. Congratulations Atashi.

Maybe I'm wrong, but I'm having a really hard week and need something positive desperately, so I'll just keep my rose colored glasses on.

That's exactly how I read it, Malia. Someone feels lifted by some good news and simply wants to tell people - we are all like that. It shouldn't attract any pedantic criticism.

It's a fine line.

I'm certainly not going to flame the OP for their message.

Hopefully I won't flame anybody for anything. A little pointed humor is far more effective. (Nikki was being overly sensitive)

But I appreciate the discussion about where that line is.

You blatant self-promoting avatar!

All kidding aside, congrats! What I admire is that you have good news to share and still manage to post it as a question, so it does belong in RA after all :D And with that election on Meta Makeover TV, you indeed do deserve your place here.

And now I am going to watch that link!

Thank you all for your kind words! :)

The whole thing came as a huge shock because I'd actually never heard of Meta Makeover before they contacted me about the interview; the person who had nominated Waikiti had done so without telling me. (He's still a friend, don't worry.)

I do understand there is a fine line, and was a bit uncertain about starting the thread. Ultimately though, yes I do want to share the news, and do accept the critical comments along with the congratulatory ones.

Cheers! :D
