Transferring Folders to Box question

Hi

Well after a long time procrastinating I am finally getting around to boxing up some of my inventory - my "way out of contol inventory" - and I am hoping the answer to my 1st question is a YES,

Is there a way to move a folder to a box? like a script or something I don't know about?

If not, when I buy certain products, I touch the box or open it and a folder with the objects bought are in my inventory, how do I do that? So that if I want to unpack the box again at a later time, I get a folder and not a multitude of items I have to put into a new folder. Sorry if this seems like a silly question.

Hope my questions make sense ... TIA

You should be able to open the box in edit mode and go to the contents tab and then drag your folder to the contents window.

I'd recomend creating a prim for every folder you want to archive. Otherwise things will all be scattered int he prims

You can drag the contents of an inventory folder into the contents tab of a prim's edit window. Be ware, though! Prims can't hold folders. If you want to organize your stored inventory, you'll need to put each folder into its own prim. Then you can put your folder prims into a master prim.

It's not the neatest way to do it, but it works if you take some time to get organized first.

If you drag more than one folder into a prim, all the objects will be at the same level - there's no nesting or organization. And everything goes in alphabetic order.

It pays to give things short names that help you remember what they are, or to make notecards listing the contents of the prims.

For my own information, are you saying it will only move the contents of the folder rather than the folder itself? For example, if you move two folders, it would just mix up the contents of both folders in the prim?

Thanks everyone, I have been taking all my inventory individually over to boxes i.e Dress 1 outfit goes to one box and Dress 2 outfit goes to another, but have been unable to actually transfer the folder itself, just the contents of the folder from my inventory!

It is a very time consuming process, I was hoping there would be an easier way as I really need to do the thousands of textures I have, I want to keep them all for future building projects. I have trashed a lot of old things I no longer use or need and that appears to be the simplest and quickest way to reduce the amount of inventory I have- unfortunately!! :)

the folder stays in your inventory, it don't remove it when you drag and drop it into a prim

the shift and ctrl keys can be used to speed up selections too at times

How many times can you do the prims inside a prim, inside a prim, inside a prim trick anyway?

iirc it's possible to do it on an infinite amount of time since each prim references 1 prim in inventory (and not the prims stored in that one prim)

Wrong question.

The right question is, how many boxes do you want to open before you get to the box you want?

Prim capacity seems to be infinite, but patience usually isn't.

For textures I highly recommend a texture storage system. I got mine from K.R. Engineering and after months of using boxes to hold my textures it was a godsend. It's so much easier to search, sort, and retrieve textures.

As posted earlier, to put things in a box use the right-click Edit option and then drag them into the contents tab of the Edit window. To retrieve them then you don't need a fancy script. Just right click on the box and go to Open, you'll get a 'copy to inventory' button you can press and the objects will appear back in your inventory in a folder with the same name as you gave the box.

I don't think you can drag and drop more than about 20 things from a folder into a prim at a time. So you may have to drag folder contents to the prim in batches of about 20. You can't drag the folder itself over, just the contents.

Anyone know if this may cause an issue with the items within the box disappearing? I have a vague recollection that if something doesn't exist in world somewhere that eventually it disappears from LL's asset server? This has always made me nervous about boxing things up unless I really don't care if they disappear never to be seen again.

Thanks for the recommendation on the Texture Storage System, little out of my price range right now (rent to pay) but I will definately be shopping around for something like this as the bulk of my inventory is textures, I'm addicted to building so this would indeed kill 2 birds ... get them stocked and still able to access easily!

And also thanks for the "the objects will appear back in your inventory in a folder with the same name as you gave the box" ... this I never knew ... not a complete noob on SL but somethings I have never done so therefore do not know about!!

Thanks everyone for the responses, would have answered sooner only we lost power last night due to the severe storms & tornadoes! I guess my best option is going to be a storage of somesort! :) Have a good one!
