I'm not sure how this happened, but I was using voice in private IM with a friend and for some reason, a few people could hear my half of the conversation in world. I was in a dance club at the time and needless to say, it was a bit embarrassing. Not hugely so but a few things were heard that should have been private. So what sort of operator error did I do?

Not sure but this is why I'm a bit nervous of using IM voice calls.
Perhaps the call ended and you didn't notice? If so it automatically goes to local.
Should be able to tell if it's transmitting to local, by whether or not you have a dot over your head, and those wavy lines appear when you speak. Also I've noticed on IM voice, there's no feedback if both speak. It's more like a phone call, sound-wise.

That tends to happen when the other person is disconnected you get connected to the main chat again

They should get a pop up saying that the call was ended, though.
Maybe it was beneath a stack of unread group announcements or something.

All the voices I've heard on SL sound like they're going through voice-change software - whether the voice sounds male or female!

Pay attention to the dot above your head, if you're seeing the ((( * ))) and not just the dot, then you're connected to open chat.

I've heard a male to female and a female to male using obvious voice changing software but most of the time voices sound fairly normal. Sometimes there is static or feedback. How did I know it was software in use - sometimes the actual voice would come through. The rest of the time it sounded like a Herbie Hancock vocal.

From: Snickers Snook I'm not sure how this happened, but I was using voice in private IM with a friend and for some reason, a few people could hear my half of the conversation in world. I was in a dance club at the time How well did you know the person you were talking to, and how do you know others heard you? Here's a possibility: you were chatting with someone you met at a club, and that person was running more than one avatar. Those other avatars commented in text chat about what their operator heard in voice chat, either because he was being an ass or because he forgot the conversation was private.

From: Conifer Dada All the voices I've heard on SL sound like they're going through voice-change software - whether the voice sounds male or female! LMAO that's sooooo true!!!! Ok, but here's the really scary part.....I absolutely agree with that statement because when I've been out and about and randomly heard voices, that's always what it sounds like....it's creepy. LOL BUT.....I don't use voice hardly at all.....and when I did, it was because I attended a metting with the MS Support group I'm involved with and many of the people preferred voice for obvious reason.... Anyway.....the meeting was about an event to raise money and some girls were gathering to discuss some details.......and everyone sounded NORMAL. So.....this begs the question (to me)......this was an isolated meeting among people gathered for cause.....in that particular setting, everyone was totally who they are IRL. But, what are people REALLY up to out there when everywhere else I hear voices they sound like grinding gravel!? The OP's topic is exactly why I don't use voice unless totally necessary....I'm not really thrilled about listening to some random conversation while I'm out shopping (and often times you'd SWEAR the people thought they were speaking in private.....or they SHOULD have been! lol) And, I wouldn't want to disrupt anyone else's experience by throwing MY voice all over the place for what amounts to mindless conversation (in such public settings.....like....oh which shoes do you like.....does this hair make my ass look boxy....that kind of thing )

Yep, if it's worth saying, it's worth typing. Chat and IM are very useful alternatives to the babble we often have to put up with in RL. The few times I opened voice in SL, I was almost compelled to hit 'Ctrl+Q'.

I like voice- i often forget to use it - u use to encounter it more- it depends on the venue.
As for the OP's topic- I would suggest havig the voice connection thru a different party entirely - like YM - and making sure voice is turned off in SL - Additional advantage to that - if you crash you dont get cut off. Last night was a crash fest for me, I was in a crowded club and it was overloading me at times- i finally went into ym to ensure i wd nto lose the voice connection with each crash.

I don't use voice, but if I did I woud SO use voice changing software.... and make myself sound as neutral as possible just to fuck with everyone.

From: Windsweptgold Wopat That tends to happen when the other person is disconnected you get connected to the main chat again Thats probably what happened. Everyone is having problems with voice though . Its best to use private voice chat . Twice last week I was able to still hear local voice chat after I teleported away from a sim .

The other night I hadn't even pushed voice to talk or locked down or anything but my mic started being broadcasting in world. It didn't have the greenbars going either, so it took me awhile to figure it out. I had to mute the mic.

I had a similar situation while typing a conversation (hate voice-but that's for another thread). Myself and the person I was IM'ing suddenly realized our entire conversation were coming out for everyone to see. There were definately things that shouldn't be seen in public. All I had to do is reboot my computor to fix the problem.

SL voice is convenient, but I find spatial voice in social situations intolerable. Somehow, to me, it is much worse than walking through a party in RL. So I only use it for one-on-one conversations, or in a meeting (in which case it is like a low-quality audio conference, so why not just use a real audio conference), or to listen to SL performances.
And, for private voice with good friends, I tend to use Skype. For me, the sound quality is better than either SL voice or YM.
(By the way, apropo of nothing, did you guys know that Skype now lets you call US and other countries' toll-free numbers free, from anywhere in the world?) .

This happened to me once, and it freaked me out! I was in a call with another person, and there was a third person at the same place as us, but not in the call with us. Somehow we started to suspect the third person could hear us, so the person I was in a call with said (in voice) "Type 'popcorn' if you can hear us." The third person...she typed 'popcorn'...

From: Anya Ristow How well did you know the person you were talking to, and how do you know others heard you? Oh I know the person I was talking to very well and have chatted with him in private and public voice several times before. I actually did the call initiate thing myself. The chat light was green the whole time on the IM tab. So the connection was there. It was maybe about 10 minutes into the conversation when someone in the club said, "Is that Snickers voice??" Someone else said yes. And then they typed something back I had said. I asked a friend who was in the club if they could hear me and she said yes. So at least 3 people in the club heard my half of the conversation. They didn't hear him. My friend who I was voiceing with wasn't even in the same sim as me. (For those with evil minds, it wasn't sex chat but we were talking about some personal things.) I'm just super puzzled as to how it made it out into both places? Or maybe I clicked something that put it into world voice while still keeping the IM voice open?? Can SL do that by design? (And how did this question have anything to do with voice changing?? /me rollseyes)
