Creator of object changed – Linden Labs Responsible - Help

Does anyone else dread talking to Linden Labs customer service ticket system? Asking them for help is a painful and many times non-predictive process. I am not sure if the service is out sourced, they do not know their own software, or simply do not like the players.

I asked them about something that came to my attention December 2008. A simple two prim candy cane I made with a texture I made with my name on the bottom of the object changed creators from me to someone else.

At first I was thinking, “Wow, seriously? Someone stole my candy cane? How petty”, because the design was so simple and I knew it was my 100% because it had my texture with my name on the bottom in tiny print, which seemed stupid to keep my texture with my name if you are going to steal it.

What I discovered when I looked into it, was no one stole it. All Candy canes I created, there are nine styles had changed creators. The master copies in my inventory and ones I gave to friends 2007 Christmas all changed creators from me to someone else (That someone else is the same person for all the candy canes, but I will leave out there name, because I know they had nothing to do with this, and I am sure it is against TOS or something to mention their name in a forum talking about them).

The reply I get from linden labs is they cannot enforce any contracts, oaths, etc as if I made some sort of deal with someone. I tried to explain it a second time and they gave me the same reply and said to send in an abuse report. The last question I sent was how do I send an abuse report on Linden Labs?

Logically if objects I made all by myself with textures I made and own in my inventory at some point in time from December 2007 to December 2008 these nine candy cane styles creator changed from me, to someone else, and would by default mean Linden Labs did something, because no player to my knowledge has the power to change a creator of all one set objects I created as well as the master copies in my inventory.

What I believe happened is a mistake happened with the asset servers during 2008 when there was a server update or transfer of assets. That is when the creator changed.
Does anyone know how to get help with this or correct this? I am fearful and concerned, “What if it was something important that changed creators while in my inventory?”

I am just so very thankful that it was a simple object that this happen to. If this happen to an object I invested a lot of time in, it would actually be upsetting and devastating, because I know Linden Lab support would be like, “Taught lucky!”

The fact it was something not extremely important is why I did not ask Linden Labs sooner and because I dread their awful customer service with their ticket service. The reason I am motivated to ask now and look into it, because I am worried, what if it does happen to something important? I will be [Insert Profanity word].

Just more proof that they don't actually *read* the report? Seems like it to me.

I've had I-don't-know-how-many-now fully original creations over the last two years switch to "unknown" in the creator field, which is frustrating enough, I'm very glad I haven't experienced your issue.

Wish I could offer some helpful advice rather than just a "I feel for ya", but that's all I can do, sorry :(

I feel for ya.

Keep re-opening that support ticket. Keep explaining that this is not a complaint about another resident, but notification of a problem with LL's own software.

I also suggest you open a JIRA issue on this, and label it as Critical. Include all the evidence, including the UUIDs of your objects. Include, as best you can, the date(s) around which you believe this happened. Reference the support ticket number.

If LL tells you to AR, then AR...and do it against the Linden who answered your ticket.

I wonder if it's a related problem to something that happened to a load of my creations (that I sell) during an asset server update or migration.

I sell a lot of texture-changing items I tend to call all the scripts that do the changes, "texture controller", but, of course, the scripts themselves vary somewhat. I sell a lot of lamps like that - same filenames but different code in the scripts. After one asset server update or migration, all the lamps had the same script in them, including those in my inventory - right filenames, but mostly wrong scripts. Fortunately, it only affected items that I owned, and there wasn't a problem with any that had previously been sold.

LL got the programming a bit wrong for performing the update or migration, and the subject of this thread sounds a bit like the same thing. I informed them about it so that they could be aware of such a problem for future updates/migrations, but I'm sure it went in one ear and out of the other.

Thank you RobbyRacoon Olmstead, Lindal Kidd and Phil Deakins.

RobbyRacoon, thank you for at least your support and understanding. LL makes it sound as if "you" are at fault always. I wish LL had a bit more support and understanding. >_<

Lindal Kidd, thank you for telling me how to handle this. I am not familiar with the procedure to get things taken care of. I once had a problem with a few items in my inventory disappearing a long time ago, and did everything linden labs told me to do, but after months of complaining they effortlessly restored the items. I never understood why they did not just help me and do that in the first place. I am learning you really have to keep asking again and again until they actually take care of the issue.

Phil, I remember something about a “migration” or some update during 2008. I bet that has something to do with that. I am sorry to hear you were not heard and affected as well. This is a serious error on their part.

Thank you both. The SL community is always so knowledgeable and helpful. ^.=.^

possible preventive approach

Perhaps this could be prevented by making a copy of the object as soon as you make it, rename the copy, and give it to an alt. Like, rename a copy of MyObject MyObjectBackup and give it to an alt. Dunno if this would work or not. Don't want to induce the problem to test it even if I knew how. Perhaps someone with expertise can comment.

Just out of curiosity, I wonder how close your UUID is to the other person's UUID.

Go to http://w-hat.com/name2key and enter first your name, then the other person's name, and compare UUIDS.

Which of the QA Lindens was put in charge of missing inventory reports a year or more ago? I THINK it was Vector but am not for sure. If you can confirm which Linden, then I would try sending a message directly to them and see if are interested in looking into it.

In the past, once I've gotten a few unhelpful replies from reopening the same support ticket, I've closed it and opened a new ticket with a slightly different title. The new ticket is then assigned to a different, and usually more helpful, Linden.

Yep - it seems like once a Linden takes the ticket, that's the Linden you deal with, even if you re-open it..

I think you mean Vektor Linden. :) He is in charge of QA. I may get some flak for saying this, but this sounds more like a technical issue rather than a customer support issue. I would open an JIRA and hammer on that. Maybe then someone who has the technical expertise to recognize the implications of the issue will step up.

The real problem is going to be proving what you say happened, actually happened, and not that someone slapped your texture on their cane.
