Ive seen avatars that are not human, but ive never seen oh say, a normal looking dog / wolf avatar, for example. I'd be a normal looking doggie if I could, but there are no such avatars that I have ever seen.
I did see an avatar that didn't have ANY legs before, but it still stood upright/straight and floated around.
So.. doggies possible?

Anything is possible with the right tools... I hang around with a Siamese cat very often and one of the NCI land officers is a 3 headed dog. (^_^)

Yes, there are all sorts. From dogs to lions and tigers to giant spiders - oh, wait, that's eight legs... You'll find these many places, but again, Grendel's Children should be your 1st stop.

There used to be a free dog avatar at the CSI site. I don't know if it is still around.

Like people above said: no, not all avatars are bipeds and there's some very cool quads (and other numbers) out there..
One of the problems with non-bipeds (and tinies) is that you need to have a custom AO and deform the avatars shape a lot to get them to work correctly. Even though the end-result is cool, you sorta lose the ability to interact with any aminations designed for bipeds. Can't dance, can't hug, etc, etc unless you have a animation custom built for your avatar..

So.. doggies possible? Very posible. I've seen doggies about, but I dunno who made the avvies. Both my Grendel's Children dragon and triceratops arw quadapeds. I also have a couple "no peds" and a pillogryff who, while the avvie has four legs, it doesn't really use them at all. Mari

Jakkal's Werehouse sells a bunch of quad dogs and canids in their "Critters" line. I have forms as a tricolor collie, as a red fox, and as a black wolf. It has a fantastic AO that comes with it for facial expression and animal-like movements. They also have wild and fantasy quads, like lions and Gryphons and dragons. They also sell matching anthro forms for most of their quads.
Ninja Weasel Studios has a "Feral" line of furries that walk either bipedaly or in quad mode.
I have an adorable tiny fox that is a quad. Can't recall the maker's name, but if you go to the Rocket City Furmeet sim's merchant area, they are along the right hand wall, and have a vendor with a Chinese-themed red frame. It has optional wings. Like all "Tiny" avatars, it can't use most pose balls.
Look around the furry themed sims, like Serenity Woods, Kitsune Valley,

I've got a robot that rolls around on tank treads and a steam crawler that is sort of a four-legged steam-powered robot-thingy. There are a ton of non-bipedal avatars.
edit - forgot about my dragon - also 4 legs.

Essentially ALL avatars are bipedal. By this I mean that the avatar mesh itself is always bipedal. There are however (as many people have already pointed out) plenty of quadrupedal (and even octopedal) avatars out there - are you sure you've been logged into SL? Often the avatar mesh is deformed in some way (using a .bvh animation) and the arms will become the front legs and the legs will become the hind legs. I built a Tachikowa avatar (from Ghost in the Shell) and the back legs are actually driven by subtle foot movements while the front legs are driven by the arms which are bent in on themselves... ... Anyway, enough waffle, go get out there and use the search function, there are more multi-limbed avatars out there than I've had hot dinners (and I like my hot dinners!) Make like Iggy Pop and be a dog!!!

I have one of the Werehouse fox avatars, all black with a white-tipped tail, and she's utterly adorable. I hear that Carrie Tatsu of Zooby's is working on critter avatars - considering how good her pets are, I'd keep an eye out there.

You can pick up a free K9 avatar (Dr. Who) it's pretty good. Technically he runs on wheels..so I guess that's not bipedal..in actual fact he is because there's a little guy running underneath who stands up and reveals himself from time to time (maybe I should rephrase that..nah it's kinda freaky anyway)..

wow... Thanks for all the praise guys. I know I'm a little late on the ball with this thread but... I figured I should post to it. (I design the WereHouse avatars) The drakkolupen.com site is our old one actually, we have better pics here: http://www.werehousesl.com/galleryFor all of you have that WereHouse Critters Avatars, we are working on updating them across the board, so I'd suggest joining the Realmscapes group to be notified of updates for them. Right now we have updates for Wolf, Coyote, Collie and Huskies should be available tomorrow. So IM me if you need an update card for them. And finally... From: someone ps I would love it if he made a 4 footed house cat av <hint...hint> She.. actually >.> But we do have housecats on the 'to do' list. And people can feel free to request other animal types.

For what it's worth there were free dog avatars at the "I Am Legend" sim as well. I don't know if that sim is still up and running.

Hoof It has a section for equine AV's. They have both normal animal and anthromorphic forms. If you get the animal form, don't forget to pick up a saddle for a passanger. Actually ... if the cartel ever set a date for riding, I'll probably pick one up and go as a mount just in case one of the ladys would like to go but don't have a horse
