Whenever I take a peek at the land auctions site, I see parcels going for what I consider very high prices. Has anyone snagged a bargain via this process?
I always get the impression that people get over excited with this and are so determined to win that they pay over the odds, often paying more than they'd have paid had they just used the inworld land search options for similar parcels.
I know that all land isn't equal and that a 512M parcel in one sim is going to be worth more than a 512M parcel in another sim but some of the prices seem high to say the least.

It could be that most parcel auctions are triggered by requests to LL to put them up. Somebody particularly wants a certain parcel that has been abandoned. Other neighbours may want to expand their holding in a sim. Maybe opportunists see a chance to buy something that has confirmed value to others. Perhaps they hope that the auction losers will be overcome by regret in the aftermath and be prepared to pay a few thousand more to get the parcel? Or maybe people just go auction crazy. It's well known in RL

Just look at Ebay-a lot of people just go crazy and as soon as more than three are bidding on something, the price will go up like crazy....

I don't think it's people getting caught up in the thrill of the auction.
I believe it's either people who have their heart set on land in a particular sim (a lot of the auctions are on older, established sims) or newbies who think this is the only way you can buy land, or a combo of the two.

The recurring cost of tier is more important than initial cost if you keep a plot long enough.
There are also many cases where plots are for sale that could ruin a person's successful business if something really terrible moved in next door.
SL prices are also trivial to many people. This factor often gets ignored when trying to analyze the SL economy and people's spending habits.
