Does anyone know the lastest info on the 'supposed' b.places HUD virus?

I was told that it will eat my Lindens and then send itself out to others.....

Is this a hoax or a real SL threat? Please advise.... thank you in advance for your help.

I'm not certain on that particular object. But a good rule of thumb is NEVER give an object permission to take your money (the dialog box for that is bright orange these days) unless you understand exactly why it's doing so (basically, only if you're setting out a complicated vendor to sell your stuff).

Not my doing...

It isn't anything I am writing..... I recieved a notecard as I entered into a sim.... it warned that b.places HUD was malicious and that if found used in their sim, the user would be banned.....

I have since found it in my inventory folders, and am both curious and frightened to see what it is or may do.....

So, I am trying to find out if any other sim landlord or resident has heard of it.... it is usually packaged with a free penis which serves as the bait to aquire it.

I know I have it in my inventory..... I don't necessarily want to delete without knowing what it is first.... so I am looking for any one that may have any knowledge of it....

Thanks again in advance.....

I dont know about the HUD, but a friend of a friend lost all his money after being given a free penis, so your concern seems justified.

If you don't know what is, don't accept it. Simple as that.

I think I may have one of the HUDs in my inventory. I do use their kiosks that allow people to vote on cool places in SL. I've had them out for almost two months and not had any complaints from any of my visitors.

Putting "b.places" and "Second Life" into Google yields http://www.b-places.com which is a website for Brussels Airlines. That page includes a link to http://www.b-places.com/mybplaces.aspx which describes it. There's a movie at http://www.b-places.com/mybplaces.aspx .

There's a notecard inside my b.places HUD that shows as being created by Enabran Templar. The notecard says in part:

///////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

Welcome to b.places your Second Life Resident Rated Hotspot Directory!
This b.places HUD is fully featured and brings you always the latest Resident rated Life Hotspot Rankings! Updated every 60 seconds!

[ I removed a big section of the notecard - SueCB ]

The b.places Voting Box let’s you vote for your favourite Second Life Hotspot. You find on every b.places Hotspot at least one Voting Box
If you like a Hotspot, simply click VOTE on the Voting Box and your Hotspot receives an additional resident vote on the b.places Hotspot ranking!
The Voting Box will also show the number of votes received at this Hotspot.

The Voting Box also allows you to click for a HUD, get more information and it links you to the b.places web ranking.

To see the b.places Hotspot Ranking, submit a Second Life Hotspot or receive more information go to www.b-places.com

My b.places hud looks like this:

I have no connection with the makers and just investigated it upon reading this thread.

It _looks_ like a legitimate enterprise to me. It's paid me 6 or 8 lindens or so at this point for going to the sites it has links to.

Of course, there's nothing to stop someone else from making an object named b.places .

I did the same research before accepting the kiosk and becoming part of their listing. Most of the places I see on the list are legit: Avilion, Tableau, Phreak Isle, Dublin, Abbotts Aerodome, Luskwood....

I have thought (up to this point) that this was just about the coolest way I've seen a RL corporation use SL to help promote themselves by working with the way their potential customers use SL.

The b.places HUD is legit - but I would not at all be surprised if this is one of the many objects dat has had malicious code added to it by third parties.

In short - if you get the b.places HUD from the appropriate b.places kiosk (You'll find a couple in Tableau, I believe), then yer fine. If some stranger hands you one unasked for? don't use it.

As an aside, I was in Ambleside yesterday, hoping to find a Linden to answer a question for me (I found several, but the wrong kind - all dev folks), and while flying around, a random stranger dropped the old freebie BMW motorcycle on me. I did't bother to rez it for this same reason.
