Can't get my TV to work

I just bought a TV and am having trouble getting it to work. Is there a good tutorial around? I've set up Preferences to allow streaming media and audio, set up the media tab in About Land and deeded the TV to my group. Interestingly, what I see happening is when I go to Edit the TV, under the Owner name, it says "Loading" and is stuck there. Same on another object that I have deeded to the land owning group...stuck on "Loading". I suspect this is the problem but does anyone know why it would stick on Loading the owning group name for more than 15 minutes? Also, Quicktime appears to be set up OK. I can go to the store and play TV shows on their demo models. Thanks for any pointers to reference materials.

Some televisions come with a receiver that also needs to be deeded.

What happens when you touch it?

When I touch it the channel selection menu comes up, then I select a channel and it says in chat "watching "xxxx"" and the screen goes black (logo disappears) as if it's trying to show something. When I touch it and hit STOP the logo reappears as if the show had been stopped. Isn't there a wiki on this or something?

May be unrelated, but I just rezzed a cube and deeded it to my group...it is sitting there trying to load the owner name (in edit) just like the TV. I suspect that this problem is related to the failure to show video but am not sure. Thanks!

Could well be, also make sure you have the television the right way round, silly as it sounds sometimes this is the problem.

ya that happened to me in rl with a tv ... i had it turned around and couldnt see the picture untill some one came over and said .. turn it around

So, while the screen is black, can you check the About Land / Media tab, and see if the media stream is set to something... and it get set to something different if you select a different channel? If that is happening, then the TV script is doing what it should be (which means the object is deeded correctly, the "loading..." bit notwithstanding).

If that's the case, then we'd need to figure out why your Quicktime installation likes one video format (somewhere else) and not the one you're trying to play.

I have been wanting to ask for some time now ---- what do people watch on SL TV and why do people watch TV in SL rather than just watch it in RL?

Fixed...the last Windows Update apparently turned the Windows Firewall back on (I use Norton 360 normally). I turned it off and now it works fine. Thanks, all.

Lil, I don't know what I'm going to watch. I just wanted the TV and am looking for a radio too.

A couple I know, partnered in SL, like lots of 'down time' at home in SL, they watch movies together at home, (in SL) on tv all the time. I think it's kinda nice......

I have a TV at my cafe that is limited to only show clips from Bollywood films that I have selected ... but this is a very specialized use of a TV and not the common one, I think.

I've never been tempted by the idea of watching TV or movies in SL, though I could see the appeal of watching a movie with a SL friend. It wouldn't be as easy on the eyes as watching it by myself in RL, but then I wouldn't have the company of the SL friend either. A trade-off, I guess.

OP: Some televisions just do not work well on group land. Check out the products wanted page. I asked about televisions that do. Maybe that will help you.

Also there was a thread here a while back about editing the tv's script or note card as well but I can't remember anything more about the thread, now. Sorry. Maybe ask in a scripters group chat?

I'd think there would be a ripe market for a product like this - a tv that works well on group land. Most work best when not, though.

Another thing I do is simply to copy and paste the URL for the media stream into the media tab. That works on any land.



America Free Tv. It's great. I love those old, old movies and many are better than anything being created from the Cheez Whiz factory Hollywood has become.

The best free movie currently running is an Orson Welles suspense melodrama called "The Stranger." Really, really good - and a total surprise since I'm a fan of his and never knew the film existed.

If you want to know why - well I wonder that myself. Something about transporting myself to a different place, I think. Projecting oneself into the created space that is SL and doing something 'normal' there once in a while. The simpler explanation is that sometimes it's fun - especially in some solitary location.

Hi lil, I love my sl tv! My partner and I have a video night where we download music videos from utube and dance in front of the tv, chatting about our rl day. I dont normally have the time in rl to watch music videos but it's alot of fun when we do it together in sl.
