I took several snapshots and saved them to my hard drive. I made a wooden frame to put the shots on. How do I download those pictures from the hard drive into a texture? When I go back to snapshot mode I see the download button- but that only downloads pictures I have just taken. I did do a search on the forums and came up with some similar things but none that met what I needed to know. once I have the texture- how do I add it to the wooden frame? I know I go into edit mode but then what? Thank you for putting up with my questions.

Choose File -> Upload Image and then upload your snapshot. Note that if you took the snapshot at a high resolution it might be a good idea to use some paint software to scale it down first - you don't need full screen resolution for SL.

Once you have uploaded the image, it will appear as a texture in your inventory and you can drag and drop it onto the face of the block you've created.

When you take a snapshot and save it to your harddrive you have to upload it back to SL. It will cost you $L10. If you take a snap shot and store it directly into SL it still cost $L10. Any photo or other graphics uploaded becomes a texture.

This is very simplified because there are other considerations such as file types, size of the photo etc.

To build a picture frame only requires two prims and I would be happy to show you if you contact me inworld or visit the Ivory Tower of Prims.

Are you trying to make a framed painting or similar? Not sure I understand the question...
If that is the case, I work on both frame and image together; flatten the resulting image, upload that and texture a prim.

How do I download those pictures from the hard drive into a texture?

First, let's talk about terminology. You've got it a little backwards. What you're trying to ask is how to upload, not how to download.

To download means to bring information from a server or other external device to your own local machine. When you send information from your own machine to an external server or device, which is what you're looking to do with your image files, that is called uploading.

The answer is you simply click on the word "File" at the top left of the screen in SL, to open the File menu, and then click where it says Upload Image. Then, in the dialog that pops up, browse to wherever you have your file stored, select it, and click OK.

So you know, some conditions do apply as far as making your images suitable for use as textures before you upload them. See the sticky on texture sizes at the top of the texturing forum for more information.

When I go back to snapshot mode I see the download button- but that only downloads pictures I have just taken.

Again, what you're looking to do is upload, not download. The snapshot utility does offer you the ability to upload a new snapshot as a texture, but that's as far is it goes. Basically, all it does is take a picture of whatever is currently on display in your local viewer, and then it immediately asks you where you want to put it. If you want to upload an image you've previously saved, that's what the upload utility on the file menu is for.

Sounds like someone skipped Orientation.

Right click on the prim, and select Edit from the pie menu. The editor window will open. Click on the More button at the lower right to expand the editor, so you can see all the options. Then click on the Texture tab. It's pretty self explanatory from there. You'll see all the options to choose a texture, set how many times you want it to repeat across the surface, how far you want to offset it from center, how you want it rotated on the surface, etc.

Alternatively, you can simply drag a texture from inventory onto a surface to apply it quickly.

You might want to check out the Knowledge Base and Wiki, they are both chock full of answers to how to use SL.

Torley's made a number of video tutorials, if videos are what works for you.

http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Texture_Tools has some links of texture tutorials.

Is there a way to drag a texture onto an object and have it cover all sides?

???

Um, I hate to redirect the thread, but that seems an odd thing to say - there's nothing at all about editing on OI..

I saw a gizmo not long ago that somehow connected to Flikr and displayed images in world from your Flikr account.

Monjolichat... also- it is more realistic if you apply the "picture" side only to the front -so... when u go to apply the texture, first "select", them click on the side you want a particular texture on, then choose the texture. Or, if say the whole thing will be a wood then with the painting on the front, you could first select a wood from the Texture Library and apply it. Then selecting ONLY the front, apply your newly uploaded painting to that side...and voila! A work of art! :)

A single prim frame is also and option. Res a box, flatten it along the z-axis, and the taper the X and Y a little bit. The picture goes on the top face; use any wood texture from the library for the sides. Rotate 90ยบ and your done. Low (one) prim framed picture that's fast to res.

There isn't? I haven't been through it in a while, but there used to be basic building instructions there, unless I'm smoking crack today and I don't know it. My apologies if nothing like that is still there these days. I thought there was.

Not directly by dragging onto the object itself, no. But you can drag a texture from inventory onto the texture field in the editor, and it will be applied to the whole selection.

Nope. In fact, Build is turned off on OI.

There are some basic building instructions on Help Island, but HI is no longer a "required" stop during in-processing, since LL thoughtfully put exit signs on OI that take you directly to the zoo. Excuse me, I mean "infohub".

Eep, I hadn't realized that. Bad enough they took away the little walk through, but no stop at help island, either? No wonder the n00bs come in all confused.
