I'm thinking of starting to sell my creations and I've heard of people running alts to test buying from the boxes that I would create. How can you do this?

If I go this route, does it still cost 10usd to register an alt?

No. You just create another account and that is your alt.

Thanks Brenda :-)

How can I have both running on the same computer so I can test my boxes to make sure they transfer and unpack properly?

You have to run 2 clients. It is possible, but I don't know how to do it myself. someone who knows will be by shortly I'm sure.

If you are running windows. Right click the SL shortcut and select properties. On the shortcut tab in the target box add -multiple . This will allow you to run two clients.

I have run 3 clients on my 3 year old 1gig of RAM machine. With the preferences unchanged from what they were set by SL. Just give it a try and see tweak as needed.

Yes. Of course, if you run 3 clients 2 will probably be minimized at any one time, and you will want to turn off the automatic AFK logout (happens after 30 minutes idle, I think).

Go to Client/character/tests and uncheck the AFK test.

On Nicholaz's client, that's all you have to do. Last I heard, the released LL clients still log you out after 30 minutes minimized unless you wear an anti-AFK script.

I tend not to minimize, I usually just bounce between screens using the tool bar.

So I add -multiple to what is already in the box? Or do I have to clear it all out. When I added -multiple and clicked apply. I exited it and signed onto sl and when I minimized it and tried to start again from the shortcut, I got the message that SL was already running...

What am I doing wrong?

-multiple will not work until you restart SL. shut down SL and start again. you should be able to run a second viewer.

word of warning about "-multiple"

Never date yourself - its just creepy.

Ohh yeah and you probably will want to only run two sessions after a fresh reboot since it seems to really bog down your computer when you do it.

"C:\Program Files\SecondLife\SecondLife.exe" -set SystemLanguage en-us-multiple

This is exactly what is in target under shortcut. I got this when I right clicked the sl shortcut on my desktop.

Take out the default system language part so it only reads:

"C:\Program Files\SecondLife\SecondLife.exe" -multiple

Should be good to go then. Just be aware any future installs of SL will require you to reset this as it replaces the shortcut path.

I've had situations where I needed my alt out and I had the SL client started without -multiple. And running the second client would give the 'cannot run SL because its already open'. Then I'd just change the properties to -multiple and it lets me log in. Didn't need to shut down the first client.
