From: Torley Linden (5/22/07) BBCode formatting turned off Hi! In preparation for an upgrade on our website, we've found it necessary to disable BBCode formatting on our forums. We apologize for the inconvenience; we don't yet have an ETA on the upgrade (and regrettably, can't detail more info about what the changes entail), but stay tuned. Thanks for your patience. For further info and a workaround, please see: » https://jira.secondlife.com/browse/WEB-156All right BBCode has been turned off for 87 (EIGHTY-SEVEN) days now. I think its been long enough for an update on the "update". Does anyone know when BBCode is coming back? Does anyone have some basic (since detail is vebotten) info on the web-site updates? If were never getting it back, would someone please get official confirmation so people can stop using signatures that look like crap now with the code turned off, etc. Something anyhow. Who do you have to cyber for any technical service around this forums dump?

Interesting. SO you are saying was no reason to turn it off in the first place?

No, it's a pretty clear attempt to dissuade people from using the forums. They want us to go elsewhere. Anything they can do to make the forums unpleasant is a plus in their book. I don't think Torley was lying, I simply thinks that's what she was told. But it's obviously not the truth. I expect Smilies will be next. Edit: See! it's already begun!

This irked me from the start, and I am still not sure why it is in place. Please vote for the JIRA issue. https://jira.secondlife.com/browse/WEB-156

If I had to guess, which I don't, but I will anyway... Someone likely reported a vulnerability/security problem of some sort with having BB code on, and since updating the forum software is a low priority for LL, they've just disabled it until someone feels like getting around to it. Either that or it's one more attempt to chase us rabble rousers off their front yard.

I've seen this movie before... Imho, they turned off the BB code so nobody could slip broadly offensive links into the forums - pron sites, viagra, lolcats and fuzzy bunnies yiffing merrily about. But the only way they could prevent that was turn off all BB code. As far as that line of balogna from Torley about it coming back at sometime - that was just one of his jokes where he treats everybody like mushrooms (think about that one long and hard and it will come to you).

No, no, no, it is scheduled to be turned back on right after Havok2 is deployed. Priorities! Added[\b]: sorry, late breaking news, vB Code is scheduled to be turned on following the release of Duke Nukem Forever®

From: Colette Meiji Interesting. SO you are saying was no reason to turn it off in the first place? I can't imagine any reason that could possibly justify it, other than perhaps a security issue that should have been fixed within a day.

So it was turned off for a reason that Firefox overcomes with Linkification plugin and STRIFE fixes with a Greasmonkey script?!? o.0
Gawd, I hope LL isn't that freaking stupid. "We're tuning it off, but here's how to turn it back on."
Please tell me that stupid logic is NOT what is the point behind this.

From: SuezanneC Baskerville Hm. Sounds like I guessed right on that topic. Fwiw: verifying that stupid logic is, in fact, 'stupid' logic, and that there are secure alternatives or work-arounds likewise requires an expediture of effort that I would not be surprised to find that LL things that the forums are unworthy of. (At least my guess was more on target in this matter, than certain OTHER recent threads. No matter, I care not. Satyrs shouldn't post after a visit from Bacchus. In vino insanitas & spell-o-rious nonsense. *hic*)

I use Linkification anyway, it doesn't bother me too much...

Very likely. 3.0.5 is ancient and there have been a few major bugs like that fixed since then.

From: SuezanneC Baskerville That may well be, but my point about fixing within a day applies to this case. Point upgrades, in this case from 3.0.5 to 3.0.6, are almost always straightforward and easy. If not, then vBulletin doesn't deserve its popularity. Perhaps they're considering a minor upgrade to 3.6.8, the latest version. But even there, it shouldn't take this many months to get an upgrade done.

At the very least they could correct the vB Code entry in the Posting Rules box at the bottom of each page so it reads "Off" instead of "On". This is just another example of how they do things.

Id say it was bad policy to have an announcemnt they have no intention on updating, age as a super sticky on the main forums page.
