I have a small parcel of rental land (1200m) that is winterland on the mainland. I have a nice little place set up and am trying to be a good neighbor. One of my neighbors has a very tall, ugly building with junk cars scattered around. (I was new when I rented the land, and didn't even notice it until I moved in, but I like my spot, despite the eyesore.) I put up a wintery privacy screen to block it out. I was brand new to SL and didn't know about making it phantom or transparent on the neighbor's side, so he eventually introduced himself and asked if I would do that. I did, no problem. About a month ago, I got an IM from one of the Lindens that they'd returned a tree to me, as it was hanging over a neighbor's property. I had put a couple of trees in front of the privacy screen just to make it look a little better, but I guess I put it too close to the line, and a branch hung over. I didn't know. Now I get another IM saying my snow maker was returned for the same reason (snowing into neighbor's yard). All I can figure is that when the wind goes a certain way, it must do that, because I spent a long time positioning that thing (back when I first rented this spot) so it wouldn't snow inside my house, but into the yard. If anything went into his yard, it must have been one flake because it wasn't that close to the line. So that's two reports against me now. (I assume? those are abuse reports for Linden staff to IM me and return the items?) How will that affect my account? That's my biggest concern. Of course I'm also annoyed that he didn't just ask me to move these things over, because I had no idea they were bothering him. And when I fixed the privacy screen, I said to him, I aim to be a good neighbor, if there's anything else I might accidentally do, just let me know and I'll fix it. Instead he files reports. I haven't chatted with him since, although if he had IMed me, I would have politely responded. I'm just not a big chatter, except with a couple of close friends. Maybe he wanted chat and more? I suppose there's also the chance that he has some device to listen to private IMs? My friend and I have made snarky comments about him walking around nude and his weird behavior, but only in private IM. If he "heard" those convos, he might be hurt. Otherwise, he's just a goof I guess....I would have been glad to move those things had I known they were hanging over on his side. Geesh. I've since IMed him and nicely said I didn't know, and I'll be glad to work with him on any problems from now on, and so on. Blah. I'm mostly worried about what this could do to my account (and dying to IM the Lindens and say geesh....I've had griefers driving over me with trucks and pushing me and all kinds of stuff, and I'm a big girl, and handled it myself by banning them from my land. This guy is a strange one.) Thanks for listening and any advice, Des

in the case of minor parcel encrouchments like this I doubt very much the AR's even get stored. Don't worry to much untill you get a warning or suspension with email

They stay on your account. You should send a ticket in explaining that you made adjustments to the machine after the first complaint and was unaware that the problem still existed. This way you have records of your innocent mistake.

I have asked several scripting groups about this and have been assured that private IMs cannot be intercepted. Any expert here know otherwise? PPP

PPP Believe your scripters. I've repeatedly challenged people who claim to be able to intercept IMs to prove it, even offered prizes. No takers.

Any expert here know otherwise? I have never seen it proven. There was at one point an issue that could cause private IMs to be broadcast to others, but that seems to have been resolved about six month sago. http://jira.secondlife.com/browse/VWR-1043Other than that, I have never seen it substantiated that anyone could listen in on your IMs.

Thanks so much, everyone. Yeah, there's something wrong with this guy. He was so nice at first....not sure what happened to tick him off at me. I'm glad to know private IMs are safe.

Okay, guess what! It was a mistake. (Now I feel badly for saying bad things...I think I'll see if I can edit that out; I'd hate for him to come here and see that.) He was reporting a different parcel. My snow maker was fine - it's a store a few doors down and it erupts. He said the Linden guy even came over, and then returned mine, he tried to tell him he (Linden) made a mistake, but Linden ignored him and left. Now what do I do? This shouldn't be on my account at all! I don't have a premium account, so I don't know what kind of ticket I can do. Would I do better IMing the Linden person or creating some kind of ticket? Thanks!

As a final resort, and I do mean final, after all other options have failed ... wait till you see him walking around nekkid, cam in for a nice screenshot and AR him for public nudity. That'll chill him out I'd wager. edit: Oh, now I see he meant the owner of a different parcel. Hm, I retract that suggestion. LOL

You are a paying customer. No service provider in their right mind would boot you for overhanging a few prims. Don't worry about a thing.
In fact, the service provider should be very respectful of any concerns you might have.

From: Desmond Shang You are a paying customer. How can you tell? He said he rents land. He could be paying customer but that's not discernable from his post. From: Desmond Shang No service provider in their right mind would boot you for overhanging a few prims. Don't worry about a thing. True. From: Desmond Shang In fact, the service provider should be very respectful of any concerns you might have. Really? Like it was very respectful of the concerns of purchasers regarding its Open Sim pricing changes? Or maybe like it was very respectful of SL Residents concerns when it gave bad faith assurances that gambling was ok after the passage of the UIGEA. Oh wait it was really really respectful of the rights of some of its SL Residents to run ponzi schemes out in the open masquerading as banks. That was certainly respectful. Seriously though....really?

Bleh! I've been on the other end, where a neighbor and I had an agreement about some trees on their lot that overhung onto mine. I wanted more trees, but didn't want them to count against MY prim limit. But this one idiot next door to my old shop dropped a tree onto a 16m plot that kept swaying into my shop to the point where the vendors were unclickable. So I AR'd it. What ticked me off is that I put exact coordinates of the offending tree in the AR and explained that the overhanging ones on the other side were not to be touched. Soooo, what does the Linden do? Returns the ones that I said were to stay, as well as the one that I wanted gone.
I so badly wanted to explain to my neighbor what happened, but they apparently stopped logging in and in fact, a month later, the land was up for sale.
I sometimes wonder if the Lindens read the ARs or just skim them/not bothering to read in depth. Of course it could also be that they don't have the ability to return individual overhanging items, but I don't think this is the case.

See about 10 lines of chat starting at 17:50 from http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/User:Andrew_Linden/Office_Hours/2009_01_08 . edit: don't expect it to come to a grid near you soon but yes, it seems to be on their radar..

Crappy neighbors? Those are the good ones. The con player, gamers and others who try to take advantage are the one's who will give you gray hair! Like if they decide they want your land at a cheap price and do everything in their power to get you to move!

You might be surprised. I deal with hundreds of residents every single day, and they abuse report each other with the speed of squirrels drinking coffee. While I can't know the outcome of everything, in my experience the governance team is remarkably professional at taking care of the serious stuff (minors on the grid, stalking) and also good at ignoring the frivolous ("Mommy he looked at my toy horsie, waaah!" . They aren't in the business of driving people off unless there's a very good reason. A few accidental prim overhangs wouldn't be it.

So is one more likely to have crappy neighbors in SL in the low-price quarters or does that really even matter?

*nods* I do hope he doesn't get to narrow-sighted on keeping it to only megaprims. If it's properly implemented, it'd be a great boon for the G-team, because it'd mean fewer AR's filed. But this one should be carefully and thoroughly tested before implemented on the production grid, because it could possibly become an overreacting griefing tool. But, it'd definitely be great for those of us with skybox neighbors who don't respect boundaries very well.
