I've noticed this for some time. When indoors it's almost as if the camera tries to adjust itself to how tight the room is. In some tight places the camera zooms in and out rhythmically like a cheesy 70's video effect, like it can't make up its mind how close to you it should be. Anyone else having this? I kind of gives me the heebie jeebies. Can I avoid it by setting the camera a little tighter in to the back of my head to beging with? Or is this a preferences setting I can deactivate?

I have the same problem in some buildings. I also see it when I'm too close to a wall that is to my back. It's the default camera position that causes it. Somewhere in "advanced" menu (if you don't have it click "alt, cntrl, d" (not delete but the letter "d" and you will get the menu on your UI. Adjust the height and angle if you want. But, I really don't think it a big deal. Most ceilings are pretty high and if too close to the wall just step forward a step or two. Up to you.

It's not just small rooms, and not even just when there's a wall at your back. It happens when many things are at your back - like the back of a sofa. It didn't used to do it when you were backed up to the back of a sofa, but it's changed quite recently.

The debug setting for the default camera offset is called CameraOffsetDefault. You have to restart SL for a change to take effect. To move the offset in closer to your av, change the value from it's default closer to zero, and if you want to be looking in the same direction as normal, you could change the Z value down a tiny bit too.
You can also change the focal point to adjust the direction you look at by default.
The debug setting for the default camera focal point is called FocusOffsetDefault. You don't have to restart SL for this one, you see the changes as you make them.
It's would be nice if CameraOffsetDefault updated instantly, and both of these were exposed in a really convenient manner.
The Release Candidate viewer has different options for the camera than all previous viewers have offered. I think they've incorporated some of the previously script controlled camera system into the viewer's control. So far I can vary it in ways that I like less well than the old camera, but not really any better. These are in Preferences / Input & Camera.
