Retruning or Deleting Objects: What's the difference?

Hi,

I have been appointed as an Estate Manager, and one of the powers that comes with that role is the ability to right-click any object that a non-resident has left behind, and chose Return. There is also the Deelte option in the pie menu. I have done some tests with a friend, and it appears that using either Return or Delete results in the object being returned (it does not get deleted at all).

Is this normal behaviour?

Yes, this is normal. Delete will only actually delete objects that you own. Otherwise they just get returned to their owner.

Helps to prevent accidental loss of no-copy items.

This is the message used for both 'return' and 'delete'
http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/DeRezObject

As part of this message a client specifies a destination folder. One specifies the "Lost & Found" folder, and the other specifies "Trash."

I think you've got it right thinking there's really no such thing as "delete" :)

If its a grouped item, I believe its deleted. Actually, come to think of it, if you return a grouped item its also deleted. When I purchased some land that had free stuff on it with the land purchase, (bought the land because of the items), I wanted to set it the way I wanted it and returned the parcel. Went to look into my inventory for my new stuff, nothing was returned to me even though I was the owner of the group. Expensive lesson. lol

No transfer items that are deeded to a group will be deleted if you try to return them. Otherwise the items will be returned to their previous owner.

With "grouped", do you mean group-deeded? Anything that's group-deeded and transfer returns to the person who deeded it to the group, anything that's group-deeded and no transfer goes to prim heaven.

If you were relatively new to land purchases at the time, it's possible you missed that the prim owner(s) didn't match the land owner? "Sell objects" doesn't actually transfer of all objects on the land, only those who are owned by the parcel owner.

If you care whether what you return reaches your (or someone else's) inventory, just use "Take" or ask them to come pick it up. Return is far too unreliable and it's not that uncommon for only half of it to arrive, or even nothing at all.
