Did You Get Last Year's SL Predictions Right?

At the beginning of this year, there was a thread that invited us to make predictions about what would happen in 2009. The thread is here:

/327/bc/306527/1.html

So, if you posted your predictions to that thread, did you get them right?

I predicted that:

"The shoddy way in which Linden Lab operates Second Life as a place for Second Life businesses will finally screw the wrong person for the right amount of money, triggering a nightmare year in litigation for the Linden Lab legal department."

The only major litigation currently running of which I know is Stroker's lawsuit against Linden Lab. It does look like that lawuit poses a significant threat to business as usual for Linden Lab. I don't know enough about it though to know whether it constitutes a "nightmare" at this point. Still, I will say that I got the prediciton right. It's close enough by Nostradamus standards.

Okay, that was embarrassing. Evidently I suck at prophecy. :o

In my defence: Many of the features I and others predicted would be here now, were it not for the "Viewer 2009" / SL 2.0 resource vortex.

Too bad about that 100K concurrency thing, though. :( It seemed a sure bet, too, back then.

Unfortunately, I did pretty well:
From: Yours Truly
No shadows, no flexi-sculpties, no animated sculpties, no improvement in the Windlight water, no improvements in the avatar or clothing layers, and no portals or llTeleportAgent... instead we'll have 5 new ways to teleport by opening your chat window and clicking on a link.

At least one prediction was good, though:
From: Yours Truly
I predict that pie will remain popular on the forums.

My final comment, luckily, was just as unreliable as I'd hoped:
From: Yours Truly
Yahoo buys Linden Labs, and creates a Yahoo Widget version of Ajax Life.

same prediction as last year....
"LL will tweak a few things and continue to ignore larger problems, nobody will be very happy with this, but things will continue pretty much status quo"

I can't play. I predicted nothing. I don't mean that I predicted that nothing would happen, but that I did not participate in that thread.

FFS! I used a cheat and was still wrong! I have to bow down to the superiority of Viktoria Dovgal

Xstreet ATM's will be discontinued and the money will just go to or from your L$ balance.

Now this one's a trick. LL already announced that this is going to happen, which means it will take two or three years :p

Lesee, I said...

1. Shadows, maybe later this year.

Half-right, as the code is now in the viewer -- but it does not work for all.

2. Ditto for mesh import.

Well, it did end up shown at SLCC and presumably is in the works. But no point for me.

3. Sculptie flexis before that.

Bzzt. No point.

4. Another major land mass before all of those.

Ding ding ding! Nascera, Zindra, and even the blake sea.

5. Some additions to Bay City (if only an infohub).

Ding ding ding! Hau Koda infohub!

6. More unpopular decisions, some popular ones. Life will go on.

That last one was a gimmie. :-)

A media story about bots and hucksterism. Some creepy pictures and amusing attempts at conversation on TV.

If it happened I missed it. I thought this was a sure thing, because they asked me to participate. I didn't expect that by turning them down (my general policy on RL media) I'd sink their story.

I was hoping this would be the year that LL closed the appearance gap between SL and every other video experience out there. I guess I'll hope 2010 is the year. Because SL? She is starting to age ungracefully...

My predictions:

1. Action taken by LL against bots.

2. Transparent avatars.

3. Sculpted flexies.

4. Shadows.

5. New forum.

6. Over 100,000 online.

7. More stories of SL in the news. Maybe even... a murder.

8. Teledildonics.

9. 5 more continents.

10. Teens on the main grid.

Well almost all of it was wrong... lol.

Not really!!!

1. Action taken by LL against bots. TECHNICALLY, YES!

2. Transparent avatars. YES! Just via clear sculpties! See Tensai Hilra, I'm serious!

3. Sculpted flexies. Hmm, okay, not this one.

4. Shadows. YES! If you know how to enable it...

5. New forum. YES (though, it wasn't at all what we hoped for)

6. Over 100,000 online. YES! (just quite a few of them are bots)

7. More stories of SL in the news. Maybe even... a murder. YES, SL was in the news.

8. Teledildonics. YES ~ though this wasn't news, this existed prior

9. 5 more continents. Okay maybe not five.

10. Teens on the main grid. YES (just not officially, they have always been here)

That's 8 out of 10!

Considering that Stroker's legal issues regarding Sexgen stem from other litigation that goes all the way back to July of 2007, I hardly think that you can claim amazing powers of foresight.
